The truth about the Orange Laptop deal!

I thought I’d write a quick post about the number of broadband providers offering some rather large incentives to attract new customers. When I first saw the adverts for the new Orange offer I was impressed but it instantly got me thinking – How is this possible, why are they doing it and what do they want in return? I investigated this new offer in a bit more detail and very quickly it became apparent to me that it wasn’t all it was made out to be. Below is a comparison of the new Orange Laptop offer compared to our very own Broadband Your Way Option 1. Ok, I know they are offering a free laptop but immediately a few things stand out to me – a 2Mb speed limit and a 24 month contract – and you have to go to PC World or Currys to sign up for the deal. ‘Up to’ 8Mb is now commonplace in the broadband market. Why would someone want to sign up for such a dated package and be tied into it for 2 years? The broadband industry moves at an incredible pace with new and exciting developments all the time. Two years ago 1Mb broadband was standard and the internet was not playing such an important role in peoples lives as it is today. What will the next 2 years bring? Faster speeds, TV and new mobile technologies are just the start. I wouldn’t like to predict what else will be commonplace in 2 years time. So customers on the new Orange deal might not be able to experience these things and may have to sit and wait for the contract to end before they can catch up with the rest of us. What does it cost to cancel?Huh A simple question you may think, however confirming this information proved to be very difficult indeed. A very helpful young man in the Sheffield branch of Currys informed me that the cancellation charge is £300. Currys phone support opted for ‘the remainder of the contract in full’ and PC World wouldn’t answer the phone. After speaking to 3 people at Orange it was confirmed that you are liable for the remainder of the contract in full if you cancel within the 24 months. What happens if you no longer need the connection? There are quite a few reasons for this – moving into a house with broadband, broadband provided by work or a move abroad to name a few. So, if you need to cancel in month 12 you must pay nearly £180 to do so! Can people really guarantee that they won’t need the flexibility a shorter term contract can offer? The Orange deal offers a 2GB usage limit as standard, compared to the 1GB on the BBYW Option 1.You can however add extra GBs of usage on all our BBYW products for just 75p each. We also offer free overnight usage, so any use between 12-8am won’t count towards your limit. Moving on to support, the recent uSwitch survey investigated a variety of aspects of the broadband market. As you can see Orange support and customer satisfaction was consistently named as some of the worst in the business. Is this why they need to give away a laptop to attract new customers? I work at PC World at the weekend's and while what you have said is true it isn't a very good comparison. The vast majority of people I have dealt with have upgraded to the 19.99 per month package, 40Gb download limit, Up to 8Mb and a wireless router. What would 40Gb cost on Plusnet? The contract length doesn't seem to put anybody off, I have been with F9 for a very long time now and had no interest in changing providers so providing the service isn't bad I don't think it will be a problem for many. And don't forget you get a £300+ discount on any Laptop in the store

As an ex orange employee please note (not mentioned about) technical support for them is 50 per minute and is provided by an Indian call centre (not owned by orange) call DAKSH, these employees can't have a conversation with other orange call centres because they get very confused. I found these extremely difficult to work with due to the minimum responses they used to communicate. One thing i am very proud of with plusnet is the friendly and local support which i believe customers prefer so much of these days!

People don't seem to stop and think about after sales service and support when making decisions, its all about the price then and there rather than what will happen later down the line

My exchange has been upgraded to 8mb for nearly a year now and I've lost count how many times I've requested an upgrade even though I'm paying as much, if not a lot more than a lot of people on PlusNet. I'm still running at 512Mb - if Orange can supply more than that and a free laptop for less than my £21.99 a month, it sounds like a really good deal to me !!

Really sorry that we've not upgraded you in the past. I can see the requests but it's likely that any request may have been rejected in the past as you're currently on 512k. Previously, this has been the maximum that BT have allowed for your line (due to your distance from exchange), however, now they estimate your maximum speed could be upto 1.5Mb. I have to say it looks tempting. As I only get a slow speed here anyway, the only difference seems to be the contract length and the standard of customer service. I bought my router when I upgraded to broadband so that I would have flexibility. It turned out that I would have been as well tying myself to the contract and poaying it over 12 months. The customer service from free-online was awful for a few months last year. Its certainly not a bad deal for those of us who pay for an 8Mb connection and crawl along on a 512Kb one.

I am supposed to be on 8Meg (upto) but as I live only 1000yards from the main Exchange in Scarborough I am only getting 4.43Mb so I feel I am paying too much! Regretfully there is only one telephone exchange here to serve around 200,000+/-People, this could be the reason; but even so I do feel agreived by the cost. Perhapse the powers that be at force 9 could look into the situation here at Scarborough?

My daughter has been thrilled with her Orange laptop deal which she has had now for a year. The connection is fast enough and as an added benefit she has free UK mainland and overseas telephone calls. This is especially useful as her brother lives abroad. I wish I had taken the same deal. I don't think Plusnet could provide an equivalent deal at the same price.
