Openreach announces 98 new fibre locations

Image courtesy of hairyeggg/Flickr Openreach today announced it will make fibre broadband available to a further 98 exchange areas as part of BT’s £2.5bn roll-out of the technology. The exchanges, which are scheduled to be enabled by late 2013 are scattered across the UK from Sandown on the Isle of Wight to Oban in the Highlands and Islands. The deployment will add nearly 800,000 homes and businesses to Openreach’s previously announced fibre plans. In total, the company aims to serve around two-thirds of UK premises by the end of 2014 ... Openreach is making super fast broadband available on a wholesale basis using a mix of fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) and fibre to the premises (FTTP) technologies. Both offer speeds many times faster than those currently available to most UK homes and businesses. Mike Galvin, Openreach MD Network Investment said:

“This is great news for 98 communities across the UK. Our roll-out of fibre continues apace, with over 10 million homes now having access to the many benefits this technology can deliver. “Today’s announcement brings us another important step closer towards our goal of providing this service to two-thirds of the UK by the end of 2014. We are keen to go beyond this with the help of BDUK funding and further engagement with local government and communities.”

Internet users with a fibre broadband connection can do much more online, all at the same time. A family can download a movie, watch a TV replay service, surf the net and play games online simultaneously. Chart hits can be downloaded in around two seconds, a CD in 30 seconds and a feature length HD film in 10 minutes. New fibre locations included in today's announcement (late 2013 roll-out).

NB: Due to the current network topography, and the economics of deployment, it is likely that some premises within the selected exchange areas will not initially be able to access fibre-based broadband. Openreach is actively looking at alternative solutions for these locations. Plusnet fibre is based on FTTC, where fibre is delivered to the street cabinet, and currently boasts speeds of up to 38Mbps. We are also running trials of Openreach's 80Mbps FTTC and 330Mbps FTTP services, further details of which can be found over on our Community Site Discussion forums.

Is your exchange featured in this morning's announcement? Perhaps you're still waiting for fibre in your area? Or are you one of the lucky ones who are already reaping the benefits? Sound off in the comments below ...

This is good that those areas are having their exchanges enabled. However...Do you have any information on whether this means people in areas where their exchange has been enabled for a long time (Machester East for example), but their cabinet is yet to be upgraded will now be forgotten?? I really hope they aren't just ignoring these people now and moving onto other exchanges and areas. Is there a rollout plan for cabinet upgrades that Plus Net are able to see?

http://www.cooper-marsh.co.uk/fttc/ completely agree with Dan. No fttc for my cabinet eben though my exchange has been accepting orders since march last year.

My exchange was supposed to be done in March 2011. It's just been slipped another 3 months to September 2012 and a lack of planning applications in the area makes it pretty clear it's unlikely to happen until 2013 That's not even dealing with cabinets and possible collapsed ducts, etc.

Planning applications and approval are only needed if the fibre box is located in a designated "conservation area". In other areas BT have statutory powers as a utility company to just install it without requiring any permissions - though they may need to consult with the highways authority in some cases. (I'd guess that will be boxes near to road corners)

As far as I can tell, this list is the late4st announcement of future upgrades, if you go to the Openreach website you can put in youre postcode which gives you the current status of your area. We already have a shiny new FTTC box at the endo four road, but we're not yet connected, and we show up in the 'coming soon' category. http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/ There are alos tables in Excel and pdf of the Exchanges already accepting orders, those coming soon with dates - we are Sept 12 - and those planned for the future. Hope this helps. Next question fro me is, can a Pre-order an upgrade to PlusNet Fibre for September ?

About time Dunchurch is on the list. Rugby has already had FTTC for a year. The other half of the town now has some hope!

We haven't a pre-ordering facility Graham. You'd need to keep your eye on the availability of the service in your area and place your order/upgrade once the service it's live.

I envy all you lucky people the opportunity of fibre. Fibre optic was being used in the telecomms business over 50 years ago yet it has taken BT this long to take action. Our local exchange has just been upgraded to 21CN but the satellite villages have only noticed a download increase of about 0.3 Mbps.It is the rural areas who require fibre to be laid. How I wish mobile broadband was more active.

Looking at Openreach http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/where-and-when/ seems the east and south side of York will have Fibre broadband, and the North-West side of York isn't even planned to have the exchanges upgraded, which seems a bizarre upgrade policy from BT.
