Asus Eee PC 900 Due for release in May

It looks like Asus is rushing to get its new improved version of its Eee PC out, bringing forward its release date by a month.  This may be in response to similar laptops having been announced by other companies (several of these using the new Intel Atom-powered processors), or they may have just been waiting for Microsoft to announce that it is extending support for Windows XP (since will now be a Windows XP version of the Eee PC).  XP will now be supported until to 2010 for this type of laptop: more about this at Gizmodo Windows XP Life extended . play eee pc

 Specifications for the Linux Eee PC * Chipset: Intel * CPU: Intel Mobile * Display: 8.9" (1024x600) * Memory (1 slot only): 1024MB * Storage (Solid State, on board): 20GB * Card Reader: SD/MMC * Connection: 802.11 b/g / 10/100 Ethernet * Expansion: 3 USB / VGA Port / Headphone/Mic-in * Camera: Yes (1.3M) * Battery Cell: 4 Cell * Colour and Paint Type: White * OS: Linux (Preloaded) / Windows XP Compatible * AC Adapter: Output: 9.5V, 22W / Input: 100-240V AC, 50/60Hz universal * Accessory: Protection bag & Mouse * Warranty: 2 year UK C&R

The specifications for the Windows XP version are the same apart from having an smaller 12GB Solid State drive, this to offset the cost of Windows so both versions can be sold at the same price. Both are now on Play.com for per-order at £329.99 (release date 11/05/08)

think its the Linux one for me, 8GB more space is a lot and you can still install windows if you really have to

let's hope seagate's ssd patent doesn't cause the price to rise before its release

And the most important stats: Width/Depth/Height: 22.5cm/16.5cm/3.5cm (that's 2cm wider and deeper than a sheet of A5!) Weight: 1 kg (one third the weight of my current laptop)

The interest shown in these teeny laptops hasn't been missed by the industry - well perhaps Apple, who I think missed a trick when developing what turned out to be the Macbook Air. There are many people wanting cheap, mobile accessibility in a small form-factor.. something not offered by the Mac Teatray or indeed Sony (cost-wise at least).

These little toys are pushing Linux to people like nothing else does. And it's very good.
