VOIP with Hub Two and Netgear Orbi

Hi Plusnet Community:

Searched for this specific scenario in the Community but I was unable to find it, apologies if I missed something.

I recently upgraded my broadband package from FTTC with Phoneline to SOGEA. My phoneline was just placed into its 30-day Quarantine yesterday. Ideally I'd like to buy a VOIP package (likely through A&A, using their One Touch Switching) with supporting hardware such as the Yealink W73 DECT phone.

My question is: since I am using my Hub Two router in bridge / modem-only mode and routing through my Netgear Orbi (RBR50), can I just connect a VOIP phone to my Orbi via ethernet? Has anyone tried this and can they confirm this setup would work? I'm assuming that the VOIP port on the Hub Two will be deactivated when it's in bridge mode. I did read something about having to disable ALG on the Orbi to get VOIP to work.

Appreciate any help / guidance on this topic!

Many thanks,

Jon

Fix

Jon,

For clarification, the phone port on the Hub 2 is entirely non-functional.  Therefore, without looking at other complications, you will need an ethernet connected device of some sort for the VoIP service.

Re: VOIP with Hub Two and Netgear Orbi

Thank you for the information, @Townman 😀 I spoke to Plusnet over the weekend and the advisor suggested that the covered up port on their Hub Two should work for VOIP services, I now realise that's not the case and VOIP with appropriate hardware should work with any ethernet-enabled router. It does sound like there might be potential compatibility issues between Netgear Orbi mesh devices and VOIP hardware, but I'll cross that bridge if / when I get there. I'll mark this one as fixed now, appreciated again 👍

@joncollin81

I did read something about having to disable ALG on the Orbi to get VOIP to work.

Its always a good idea to ensure that the Sip ALG is disabled on just about any router.

@joncollin81

I would sign up with A&A and get the number port done asap - just in case there are any problems.

You can then sort out the hardware for your phone.

SIP ALG is only a concern for a VoIP phone using the default in bound port SIP 5060.

The link below has a downloadable DOS program that can detect SIP ALG in your system :-
