Technicolor TG582n FTTC - https login

Do I need to login securely (ie with SSL) to the router.

This post touches on the subject lightly, and shows people are trying the secure route to connect:
https://community.plus.net/t5/Broadband/Certificate-error-when-loging-into-Technicolor-TG582n/td-p/1...

Logging in to the router from Firefox on the LAN using '192.168.1.254' in the address bar brings up a 'this connection is not secure' warning.

Logging in using 'https://192.168.1.254' you get the 'add exception' certificate warning, which when added allows you to login.

Everything seems to work fine from what I can see using 'https'.

However a call to the Plusnet technical line to ask about this - I am told not to use https or http but simply 192.168.1.254 as the secure encrypted connection can cause issues.

Living in a shared house others means other untrusted users on the network can see me, but as I am not going through any other servers to get to the router should I be fussed about using https.

I am shortly to install a Smoothwall Firewall - which I will sit behind.

Well whoever that was, has a serious case of verbal diarrhoea.

As by using the IP only you're defaulting to HTTP. By manually adding HTTPS your telling the browser you want to connect via port 443 that is secure.

Now you have your exception added there is no reason why you can't continue to use HTTPS. You may want to change the default password as well, if you are worried about other occupants.
