Synology NAS Remote Connection

I have a Netgear Orbi RBR50 connected to my Plusnet Hub 2 with an Ethernet cable. Both are set in Router Mode, and all of my wi-fi controlled devices (lights, CCTV, TV, Evo50, laptop, mobile, Revo internet radios, Synology NAS drive) connect faultlessly via the Orbi wi-fi when I’m at home. Most are also accessible remotely, either by mobile internet or external wi-fi, but my Synology NAS on which my library of CDs & DVDs is stored cannot be accessed remotely. The fault finder says there is a conflict because my network contains two routers.

The suggestion is to put the Plusnet Hub 2 into Bridge Mode, but do I also need to change the Orbi router settings from Router Mode to AP Mode? Would Bridge Mode on the Plusnet Hub 2 also disconnect wi-fi from that router, or do I also need to manually disable that?

I know how to access the settings of both routers online, but because I’ll soon be admitted to hospital for several days, I don’t want to risk losing my current remote access capabilities by tampering with router settings, but it would be great to be able to access my music and films whilst in hospital, so I thought I would ask you experts for advice.

Re: Synology NAS Remote Connection

@Robbiep   you should set the PN hub to bridge mode, and the Netgear to use PPOE router mode, and use the PN username and password in the Netgear.

Re: Synology NAS Remote Connection

Many thanks for your fast reply.

If I do as you suggest, does that mean that I need to set up all of my many wi-fi connected devices again to recognise the Plusnet username and password? That was my main reason for keeping the Netgear Orbi router when I moved from Virgin. Would it instead be possible to change my username and password on the Plusnet router to match my current username and password on the Netgear?

Re: Synology NAS Remote Connection

No, it is not the WiFi credentials that you are changing - it is the PPOE/Wan username and password.

Edit

Page 27 shows how to do iy.

Re: Synology NAS Remote Connection

Sorry for the very late reply Mustrum. I followed your instructions yesterday, with no problems. They provided two improvements, the occasional attempts of my network to connect to the Plusnet router stopped, and the wifi upload speed increased from 16Mbps to 21Mbps (download speed same at 62Mbps). But I still could not connect remotely to my NAS drive, the Synology fault finder saying that there were still two routers on the network (copy message attached).

I then tried putting the Netgear into AP mode, but that caused me to lose any internet connection, ithout which the Netgear wouldn't allow me to change it back to router mode. After several hours trying unsuccessfully to reset it to factory settings I rang Plusnet for advice, and they talked me through resetting the Plusnet hub back to router mode, after which I was able to reset the Netgear router. So I'm back to square one!

Do you have any other suggestions I might be able to try?
