Hi,
I've just started to notice that my router is making a hissing noise whenever I start downloading bits off the Internet from my iPad or Mac.
Is that a sign of something going wrong? It's a Plusnet Hub One with software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.263 if that helps?
Thanks

@olliecampbell welcome to the forum.
This noise is not unusual and doesn't affect the performance. Plusnet will tell you that the noise is acceptable. On some switching off the 5GHz band helps.

Hi there,
I'm sorry to see your router is making noises while you're using it. Just to confirm do you just hear this noise when you're using the 5GHz wireless frequency or when you're on the 2.4GHz band too?
If you're unsure how to check, as a test it may be worth switching the 5GHz off by following the below steps:
1. Open an internet browser and type http://192.168.1.254 into the address bar
2. Press the 'Enter' or 'Return' key
3. Click on 'Advanced Settings'
4. Enter the admin password, which is on the card or the back of the router
5. Click on 'Continue to Advanced Settings'
6. Click on 'Wireless'
7. Click on '5GHz Wireless'
8. Change 'Wireless network enable' to 'No'
9. Click 'Apply'
You'll then be able to see if your router still makes the same noises.
If it does, we may need to look at sending you a new router.

Hi,
Disabling 5Ghz has definitely sorted it. Does this mean I have a faulty router?
Thanks

Thanks for getting back to us @olliecampbell
I suspected it may have done. Not necessarily, the noise that comes about from using the 5GHz is deemed to be within acceptable tolerances by the manufacturer when we raised this previously.
If the noise is distracting, I’m afraid you may have to switch this frequency off as we’re not really in a position to replace routers for this as it’s likely to occur on another one.

I see. I understand but do have to say that I guess it must have been a hard of hearing person that 'deemed' it of an acceptable level. I can usually hear it 2 rooms away and the only way to resolve it is to 'downgrade' my wifi. Not really acceptable.
"I'm sorry your car is too noisy for you. Please drive it slower instead."

Understand what you’ve said and we’ll take the feedback onboard however for the time being as this isn’t affecting the performance of the router, there’d be little we can do I’m afraid. 😕
