Router IP addresses, router changing them

Why would my router be changing ip address,s ?

This stops devices connecting to the internet.

For example my Ethernet connected desktop PC had its IP changed from 192.168.1.xxx to 192.168.8.xxx

similar thing happened to my sons laptop and WiFi connected Amazon Echo

What router do you have?

Are you sure you haven't got a second router (perhaps misconfigured as a wireless access point) dishing out 192.168.8.x addresses to your devices (wifi by any chance) wired to your network while your main router (plusnet hub) is offering 192.168.1.x addresses?

ex-Plusnet (ADSL, FTTC) 2008-2023. now BT (FTTP) 2023-

Is your Ethernet connected device connected through a powerline device? it's not unknown for these if left with their default password to connect to a neighbours powerline network. Also are you trying to connect your wireless devices to a different router or wireless extender?

Do you have more than one device handing out DHCP addresses?

What do these new-fangled Amazon echo things do?

My echo thing is quite dumb and has to pick up a DHCP IP address from a router using an app. There's no built in server.

That's why I can't get my head around a dumb wireless device magically changing it's IP address and ask whether the OP is accidently trying to connect to a neighbours network, which might well be showing a stronger signal, unless there's a echo varient with its own built in server.

When your desktop gets connected as 192.168.8.xxx, you ought to be able to find out what your local network setup looks like.

You could always run a port scan with your desktop, when you find the WAN address you could lookup which ISP owns that ip address. A free wifi app on a mobile can be used to track strongest wifi signals from place to place.

Turns out a Wifi Ap had the same IP address as the plus net router.

I assume this was generating the different IP addresses.

How this was effecting the Ethernet connected devices is beyond me !!
