Plusnet with Draytek 130 and Netgear XR500

Hello,

I've had a Netgear XR500 for a few months with no issue, I've been running the router alongside the Plusnet hub, so the authentication is handled by the hub and I've switched the WiFi off so this is managed by the router. Additionally, my PC is hard wired to the router via an ethernet cable, all good so far.

I wanted to upgrade the modem, so I've bought a Draytek Vigor 130. Reading the manual (I'm disgraced by myself, don't worry!), I understand all the configuration and authentication should be done on the router, not the modem, and technically I shouldn't have to do anything on the draytek.

I plugged my cable from the filter box from the master socket to the modem, and a ethernet cable from the modem to my router. Wasn't able to access the modem managed site (http://192.168.2.1) but changed the following on the router which intermittently seems to be provide access to the modem:

Same settings for IPV4 and IPV6:

PPPOE

Authentication required? Yes

Username: XXXXXX@plusdsl.net

Password XXXXXX

Service Provider Name: Plusnet (not sure if this should be left blank?)

Occasionally, I'd get access to the Draytek site, but never was I able to get any internet access.

Can you assist, please?

Additionally, a stupid question, I'm assuming my connection is DSL as it comes from the phone line, but I know my subscription is 'fibre' - not sure if it makes a difference here in regards to settings (i.e. PPPOE or PPPOA) or if I need to repost this in the other forum.

I also found these threads, but not sure if they apply since currently I can't get a connection at all.

https://community.plus.net/t5/My-Router/Unifi-USG-and-Draytek-Vigor-130-connection-dropping/m-p/1547...

To confirm, the firmware on my draytek modem is 3.8.4_BT

Many thanks!

Dayna

Hello @Dayna and Welcome to the Forum, I don't know if this will help but on my router I have a username in the form of username@plus.net so you may want to try this.

Hi @Mook,

Thank you! Wink

I'll take a look, I did check my plusnet hub configuration and the username in this was username@plusdsl.net so I assume they should match?

Many thanks,

Dayna

Re: Plusnet with Draytek 130 and Netgear XR500

Have you enabled DHCP on your Netgear and set the default gateway to the local IP of the Netgear? Also silly one but make sure you plug the modem into the yellow ethernet port marked INTERNET.

Re: Plusnet with Draytek 130 and Netgear XR500

@dvorak Mmm, that's interesting. So with @Dayna saying theirs is the same is mine wrong?

Does anyone know what the correct, expected format is for these, as mine evidently works.

Re: Plusnet with Draytek 130 and Netgear XR500

@Mook  im pretty sure the @dvorak  is correct , the username format has always been username@plusdsl.net .

@Dayna with regards to the Draytek setup, you need to ensure its set to bridge mode , detailed instructions here https://www.draytek.co.uk/support/guides/kb-vigor-130-bridge ( you will need to register on the Draytek site first to access it ). Then your router should be set for PPPoE as you have it and its WAN port connected to the LAN port of the Draytek.  You will not be able to access the Draytek gui via the Netgear router once it has established the PPPoE connection. Unless the Netgear can be configured with a WAN port alias IP in the 192.168.2.x subnet and probably some static route, to access the Draytek gui you will need to connect ( a laptop for instance ) directly to the LAN port on the Draytek.

Re: Plusnet with Draytek 130 and Netgear XR500

Here's how to access a Draytek 130 running in bridge mode. https://www.draytek.com/support/knowledge-base/5212 The ISP needs to be using VLAN tag (I don't know if plusnet do of the top of my head) and it takes a bit of configuration on the modem and the router.

Re: Plusnet with Draytek 130 and Netgear XR500

@Dayna Yes , ignore what I said above @CaltorStorm  is correct , the Draytek 130 supports PPPoE passthough and so doesnt need to be in full bridge mode.

It will need VLAN tag of 101 configured though https://www.draytek.com/support/knowledge-base/5367

Re: Plusnet with Draytek 130 and Netgear XR500

You can check your individual connection settings in the member centre https://www.plus.net/my.html?s=0&action=refresh_browser

According to the FAQ https://www.plus.net/help/broadband/broadband-connection-settings/#what-settings-should-i-use-for-fi... it should be yourusername@plusdsl.net however it does say "If you've been a plusnet customer for a very long time then you may need to use something else after the '@' in the username."

Re: Plusnet with Draytek 130 and Netgear XR500

Hi All,

Thanks for the responses!

@CaltorStorm , not a silly one at all, no I haven't configured DHCP - do I take the settings on the current plusnet hub and apply this within the router?

I did configure the VLAN tag, it was on the VDSL 'Service' (rather than 'Customer') - the factory setting on the draytek, tag 101 and priority 0.

Cabling should be right and in the correct ports!

Many thanks,

Dayna

"do I take the settings on the current plusnet hub and apply this within the router? "

Yes, just make sure the modem is on a different subnet if it has an IP address too.
