Re: Plusnet Hub One Firmware update

Third time lucky @bobpullen - Happy to leave the router from lunch time Friday on its default settings as I have reconfig'd other devices needed for the weekend. Will reset to factory default through hub manager, then press the reset pin hole. Regards - Bob

Re: Plusnet Hub One Firmware update

I had some time consuming problems with 5 GHz connections after the latest firmware update.

The first device to show problems with an Echo Dot (amazon alexa) which does not have helpful diagnostics and can be difficult to re-configure.

I then noticed my Android phone was also showing no internet connectivity (although attached OK on 5Ghz). Even after a router restart the internet connectivity would drop after some minutes.

I have always used split SSIDs

In then end I had to completely factory reset the router, and after many attempts was able to get the echo dot to connect and stay connected, leaving the phone on 2.4Ghz for now.

Re: Plusnet Hub One Firmware update

@jwsg, if you continue to experience problems with the 5GHz radio then would you be adverse to me downgrading your device to the previous build? Only problem is that it will wipe any custom settings you have configured, e.g. the split SSID's.

@bobmanekshaw, I've no idea what's going on but I'm still struggling to upgrade your router. I've elected to send a replacement device instead that should arrive pre-configured with a more recent version.

@Xemik, thanks for returning your router. I've applied a £10 credit to your account that should be deducted from your next bill. I have the router connected as-is here in the office with a number of wireless clients associated with it, and will keep an eye on things over the coming days...

Okay, thanks. I would have been happy with just the postage, but I'll not complain. Wink

Hope it provides some answers.

The new router has been up for 4.5 days so far. It's currently 56/9, but the max has been fluctuating between 57/9 and 53/9; it seems the line hasn't stabilised yet. Of course, I don't know if my line has been moved in the exchange yet, so I'm keeping an eye on it.

Re: Plusnet Hub One Firmware update

Many thanks @bobpullen for sending the new router. It arrived today and I have just finished manually configuring it rather than restoring settings from the original and so far so good. Don't know if you want to check it out? Will send the old one back tomorrow. Regards - Bob

Re: Plusnet Hub One Firmware update

It seems like there are a few of us (@Marksfish, @Xemik@bobmanekshaw) getting similar problems with WiFi dropping out whilst the wired connection continues to function until the modem decides to reboot itself.

For well over a year we have been using the following devices on our WiFi n/w:

  • Sky+ box
  • Amazon Fire TV stick
  • Amazon Fire HD tablet
  • iPad 3
  • Toshiba laptop
  • 2 x Samsung Galaxy S7 smart phones
  • 2 x TP-Link smart plugs
  • Amazon echo dot
  • Canon printer

There is also a Synolog NAS connected via ethernet cable to TP-Link Powerline adapters.  However, this is only used for a short time once a month or so.

The broadband setup has been working fine, until the hub was remotely rebooted with FW 4.7.5.1.83.8.259.1.1 at 01:00:51 on 30/09/18 (downloaded by https://dbtpnhdm.bt.mo on 27/09/18 03:41:27).  Thereafter the WiFi connection has been erratic.

When WiFi disconnects, both SSIDs disappear.  They only reappear when either the hub is restarted manually by ourselves, or after a couple of hours or so it restarts itself (I assume).  The WiFi will either stay on for a short period and disappear again or will stay on for a few hours before it goes.

Called the Service Desk on 1st Oct and the line was tested - no errors found.

Called the Service Desk on 4th Oct.  Fortunately the call was picked up by someone more knowledgeable than the previous guy.  Discovered that when WiFi was dropped, the broadband connection was still connected to the exchange as it showed zero traffic on the line, thus pointing solely to a WiFi issue.  Suggested I download WiFi Analyzer to my phone to check for channel utilisation, resulting in a change to channel 6 as it wasn't being used by any nearby networks.  It was also suggested that a new hub may fix the problem, but I needed to re-contract to get it, which I did.

Oct 6th, new hub arrives and is installed.  Notice the the firmware is not the same, 4.7.5.1.83.8.259.  The new hub is as bad as the old one.

Called the Service Desk again on 14th Oct.  Another line test - okay.  End up with arranging an engineer to call.

Oct 16th.  Openreach check line - okay.  Changed the face plate on the master socket.  Confirmed our suspicions that it is a firmware problem with the hub.  Of course, when the hub is rebooted, WiFi is back.  Engineer discusses the situation with Plusnet support, who leave me a voicemail saying that everything appears to be working now.  We will see.

Here is a log of the reboots on the new hub.  Oct 15th was especially bad, as this was the day I changed the remaining devices to the SSID for the new hub

As the consensus is that this is a firmware issue, I'm wondering if I need to ditch the PN hub and replace it with something that will work.  Alternatively, reinstall the old hub and persuade PN to reinstate the old firmware, as 4.7.5.1.83.8.259.1.1 and 4.7.5.1.83.8.259 are not fit for purpose in my circumstances.

My experience is pretty much identical to yours and I know the exact date the wifi issues started - back in September when the 259.1.1 firmware was installed. A rollback cured the problem.

Tried a new Hub 1, but that didn't fix the problem. Initially, it didn't reset as often, then it got progressively worse. Bizarrely, the wifi would drop over night and the router wouldn't reboot until I connected my wired desktop. I'm not sure, but it seem that the router needed the wired connection to kick it back into, life.

On the plus side, I did actually have a minor fault on the line between cabinet & pole, which BT have fixed. Engineer also fitting a new faceplate while he was here. Probably would have gone unnoticed but for the router issues. Wink

It's not for me to say, but after a month of this I got fed  up and decided to buy a wifi router to attach to the Hub 1. After a bit of research I found that the price differential for a modem router was so small I bought one of those instead. Worse case scenario, it could still be used as a wifi router if it didn't connect to PN.

All my important stuff is wired, so I didn't need a high powered wifi router. ITE I bought an Archer VR900, which got outstanding reviews for it's price/performance. I'm happy with it and the b/b has been up for over 6 days now.

I sent the replacement Hub 1 back to @bobpullen who's currently testing it to try and find a fix for this oddity. So if you'd rather not spend the money, it might be worth waiting a little while.

Re: Plusnet Hub One Firmware update

Thanks  @Xemik for your response.

I will wait and see what the service is like over the next few days.  I'm currently away from home, so I have been getting my better half to plug her laptop into a wired connection so that I can remotely connect to the hub via Teamviewer.

If the service doesn't improve, the next step is to install a wireless access point which will allow me to disable WiFi on the hub. I have a Edimax EW-7228APn N150 Wireless Access Point with 5 Port switch which I bought in Jan 2012 and never used it.  If this setup stops or reduces the number of hub restarts, I will most probably replace it with something that will provide dual band coverage.

Re: Plusnet Hub One Firmware update

@BaltiSalty, please leave the current device connected. I'd like to grab some logs from it. Once I have, happy to downgrade your firmware. If I do though, there's a good change your device will reboot once a day during the early hours. You may also be targeted with an update over the coming weeks/months. I can't stop that unfortunately.

FYI, both the .259 and .259.1.1 firmwares contain the same wi-fi drivers etc. (assuming of course that this is where the problem lies).

@Xemik, the device you returned has been up for over 2 days now with a load of smartphones connected to it and it's yet to reboot/drop the wi-fi connection Huh

Re: Plusnet Hub One Firmware update

Thank you  @bobpullen.  After you have extracted the logs for the new hub, I could plug the old hub back in so that you could extract the logs from that one, thus allowing you to get a full picture of pre and post firmware update.  However, the earliest I can do this is Sunday evening at a push or Monday morning.

How old are these devices? I assume you haven't changed the wifi settings, so they should be set to Mixed. I was wondering if the age of the connected devices might be causing an issue. One of my devices is an original Kindle Fire HD's and occasionally we connect an old Samsung Note 4.

Re: Plusnet Hub One Firmware update

@BaltiSalty, I now have the logs from the currently connected device. Let me know if you want me to downgrade it, being mindful that it will wipe any custom config like NAT rules, SSID/password changes etc.

@Xemik, all fairly new devices, mainly iPhones, Android phones and an iPad. All settings are as they were when you sent it back. I'm going to grab some logging from it now on the off chance there's still something telling there from when you were using it.

Edit: actually, turns out there have been two PPP drops on the line today. Haven't been in the office today, will take a look when I'm back in tomorrow.

Hi @bobpullen.  You can downgrade the firmware at your convenience.  I had only made a small change to the IP range for my NAS to enable me to give it a fixed IP address.  For the purposes of this exercise, I won't be making any changes until the WiFi problem has been resolved.

Re: Plusnet Hub One Firmware update

I think I've been very lucky, so far at least. I've had my Hub One for a couple of months now, and it doesn't hiss. I've had the ...259.1.1 firmware for a week or so, and I've not noticed any WiFi problems. Bob - let me know if there's anything you'd like me to test that might help other people (though I'm not sure what I could do that you can't).

We've got a fairly simple setup in our house:

Wired connections: one Windows PC, one laser printer

Wireless: one Android tablet that connects at 5GHz if it's close enough when switched on. At 2.4GHz, one Windows laptop, a couple of Android phones and a version 1 Chromecast. There's another phone and a couple of Kindles that connect once in a blue moon, and if pushed I could add a netbook running a 6-year-old version of Linux. I've not altered the WiFi settings, so the 2.4GHz and 5GHz channels are synced.
