Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

Hello

My PN hub one router keeps disconnecting all my 5ghz devices from WiFi; and when I try to reconnect I either receive an unable to connect message or incorrect password error message.

I've had throughput issues for the last 5 weeks intermittently where WiFi would have connectivity issues (in the form of a slow down of the connection and then it would recover). It has been taking 18 seconds at times to get a google search to load. I called PN and they said they'd send a replacement hub, three weeks later (after someone forgot to actually order it but managed to charge the P&P) it arrived. Used it for a few days and still had the issues so I called back up and they then raised a low sync fault on my line as it had dropped from 71 to 61mbps.

Next thing I know, all my devices were booted from the new hub and refused to re-connect, spoke to PN, tried a factory reset it and same thing happened again. I thought I'd be smart and plug my old hub in (that never had the issue) as I assumed the replacement hub could be faulty. It worked and all my devices connected to it. I woke up next morning to find that everything had disconnected from the 5ghz wifi... that router received the latest firmware update overnight (and it bricked the Wi-Fi).

I spoke to PN to raise concerns over firmware and the hub and was told it was probably related to my line fault; so to leave it until OR had been out. OR came and didn't resolve the low sync issues so PN handed them back the job and told me to wait further regarding the hub situation. I was insistent that it was a separate issue and I don't want the second OR visit to pass and be left without WiFi.

As nothing could connect to WiFi and maintain the connection, last Saturday I swapped my hub one out to a vmg1312-b10a and disabled the wifi on it (as its not AC), plugged in an old SkyQ hub (with dhcp disabled) to use as a WiFi access point. No issues at all, every device stayed connected until today.

After OR left today, I again factory reset the replacement hub before connecting it up to the DSL cable (the resync around 6pm was this swap over). I split the WiFi ssid's, spent an hour reconnecting devices etc... for all of a sudden every device to disconnect again. Called PN, it's been referred to the products team.

I'm not exactly happy about the situation and my customer journey with PN at the moment. I was actually offered out my contract when they forgot to order the hub but I waited in good faith and this is how it’s ended up...

Useful info -
SSID bands are split
Tried disabling 5ghz wifi, then re-enabling it > my devices reconnected for 30 seconds and then got kicked again
Factory reset had no effect
Two hubs displaying exact same issue
Topology: 2x ethernet devices connected via a Netgear 5 port switch, a load of 5ghz devices and a few 2.4ghz devices
No boosters, extenders or powerline in use.
When 5ghz devices got kicked, I couldn't forget and reconnect to either the 2.4 or 5ghz wifi devices.
Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.263.

Re: Plusnet Hub One - 5ghz WiFi disconnects all devices suddenly

Just a quick heads up...you've left your account email address on full view at point #12 in the connection details...for security reasons I suggest editing or removing this from your post.

Re: Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

@Choco you're not going mad and you're not the only one!!

I can almost mirror what you've said. When I was on the previous 259 firmware, I didn't actually have issues - but that was on 2.4GHz and not like you on 5GHz.

I know the 259 firmware created issues with Apple devices and the 263 firmware was supposed to fix these known issues.

I then tried to connect via 5GHz and it didn't connect - but this was still on the 259 firmware.

Then the 263 firmware came along and my devices on 2.4GHz either FAILED or struggled to connect - this makes me think the 269 firmware has caused another issue with the wifi.

But imho, the issue was actually there before the 263 firmware - as I mentioned, 5GHz wouldn't work here before the update, but my hub had not been turned off for several months (the connection has been dropping, but the power has not been cut to the hub)

So, if you try this, do they reconnect fine...?

Simply turn the router off at the mains, rather than rebooting it, do they then connect fine...?

If they do, then it's imho a caching issue. I've been able to prove this using my devices, though I've not yet posted the evidence up onto these forums. I think that after x hours/days the hub remembers all of the connections it's made with our devices and then it gets full and can't cope with reconnecting the same devices. I quick off and on clears the cache and they start to reconnect again.

Having said the above, if you turn yours off (only once mind you) and on and they still don't connect, then I guess it kinda blows my theory out the window.

Re: Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

Yeah I think it's been going on for a while, told my neighbor about it tonight who I referred into PN and she said they've been having similar issues too but its not the hub one (as shes on ADSL), so I don't know if its related.

My devices won't recover even after unplugging the device at the wall and plugging it back in, they temporarily may do when I disable 5ghz and switch back on but all D/c pretty quickly. Tonight been having issues connecting to 2.4ghz too, its connected via WiFi but no webpages can load, have to d/c and then reconnect on windows to get the connection back up Sad

Doubt it, but you could be 'fighting' over the same wifi channels. Something like WiFi Analyser will bring up all the routers SSID's and the channels they're all on. You need to find a channel with the least congestion.

Something people overlook is wifi overlap, so ideally if you start swapping channels, go with 1, 6 or 11.

My devices won't recover even after unplugging the device at the wall and plugging it back in, they temporarily may do when I disable 5ghz and switch back on but all D/c pretty quickly. Tonight been having issues connecting to 2.4ghz too, its connected via WiFi but no webpages can load, have to d/c and then reconnect on windows to get the connection back up

Well that tells me the firmware is causing this then. For whatever reason the 263 firmware is 'killing' the connections. They imho need to stop the roll out.

When I was on firmware 259, none of my devices had any issue on 2.4GHz. Since the firmware mine were either extremely slow in loading pages or wouldn't connect at all!!

They sent me a replacement hub yesterday, still on the 259 firmware, and so far nothing has dropped the wifi (apart from some testing I've been doing). Mine has the update in the queue and I'm pretty sure it'll start 'acting up' once it self installs.

I do still think a caching issue affects both firmware versions. Not sure how 'we' fix this though Sad

Re: Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

Been having exactly the same problem since the firmware was updated at the end of December 2018. First 5 GHz failed within a week and would only come back with a reboot of the router, and in the past couple of months 5 GHz has started disconnecting within minutes of establishing a connection, and now even 2.4 GHz has started crashing out completely on my phone, computer, and ereader within a few hours or less, after 5 GHz has become impossible to connect to with anything. Even with the two frequencies split they still keep crashing in exactly the same why. How can I go back the the previous firmware before December 2018 when the router was stable?

Re: Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

Hi @Argyros

Sorry to hear this is happening to you.

Are you able to let us know what FW version your router is currently running? Once we know this we will be able to progress forward accordingly.

Kind Regards,

MoR

Re: Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

Just to piggyback on this, this is the EXACT same issue my router is having - kicking devices off 5gzh wifi. A reset of the device (firestick, for example) or a reboot of the router seems to resolve it for a period of time, until it happens again.

Do you know if the product team are aware of this widespread issue and if they are working on a patch? Or is this currently being looked at on a case-by-case basis?

Thanks

Re: Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

Hi dayvie,

This is something that our Products team are aware of and looking to replicate and resolve on a case by case basis but this may also result in changes being rolled out across the board - it really depends on the root cause.

Could you let us know which firmware version you're currently running?

Best wishes

Dave

Re: Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

Hi, Current firmware is 4.7.5.1.83.8.263 Last updated 18/02/19, but this problem has been present since the start of January 2019.

My computer with wifi is still getting disconnected from 5GHz after only a few minutes or hours, but my iPhone 6S+ has managed to remain connected to 5GHz for about 12 hours after I got it to forget the network and password, changed the password and rebooted the router, and then got it to reconnect anew. Before that it kept telling me I had the wrong password when it had connected with it previously, before the 5GHz crashed. Everything is no more than 1.5m from the router.

Re: Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

Thanks for that @Argyros

Has your phone remained connected post password change and reboot, or has it dropped again?

Did you do the same steps on the computer (forgetting the network, putting in the new key etc) or was that just the phone?

Thanks,

MoR

Re: Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

I had to take the phone with me when I left the house so I don't know if it would have stayed connected longer than 12 hours, but it reconnected to 5GHz at 866.6 Mbps when I got back, which it hasn't done for months. There wasn't an option to forget the connection on the computer under Windows 10 that I could find at the time. The only thing I could do is disconnect, then reconnect and wait for it to ask me to enter the new password. Did not reboot the PC. It's still on 2.4 GHz. Now I've found the forget option. Will try it and see what happens.

Also it looks like someone is trying to hack into my computer which might have something to do with it or might not.

Re: Plusnet Hub One - All devices booted from 5ghz WiFi

After forgetting the connection and rebooting the computer, then reconnecting with WPS the connection remained stable for about 45 minutes and then both the computer (with nothing else running) and iPhone lost the connection and are not able to reconnect to either 5GHz or 2.4GHz.
