Plusnet Hub Noise

Hi all

Since we got our Plusnet router a couple of months ago it has made a fairly sinister hissing/screeching noise. It seems to correlate with when I click on anything/scroll a page etc. Its getting progressively louder and I'm now at risk of throwing it out of a window, as it's right next to me!

There seem to be a few threads about this issue. Any chance of a replacement before I fix it permanently with a large hammer?

Thanks Smiley

Re: Plusnet Hub Noise

Hi there.

I'm sorry to hear you're hearing noise when using your Hub One.

Unfortunately we're unable to replacement these routers anymore for this issue. Our products team have investigated this with our vendor and determined that the noise is within acceptable tolerances, that there isn't a fault with the router as such.

One of my colleagues made a lengthy post about this here with a possible solution to stop the buzzing.

Hi @Pete_T,

After discussing this issue with our products team we have been advised that after a number of routers had been returned to the manufacturers for testing a consensus was reached that the noise that people have reported coming from the router is within acceptable tolerances.

To expand slightly on this, we don't believe that the noise is indicative of any performance issues with the router and sending out a replacement wouldn't resolve this issue as the replacement is the same model of router so the buzzing noise would still be present.

One potential solution to stopping the buzzing noise that you're hearing is to split the wireless channels within the router and I've included a guide on how this can be done below. It should be noted however that this may sacrifice some wireless speed.

1) To connect to your Hub One, you will need to open a browser and go to 192.168.1.254 If you have any issues doing this via Wireless, we recommend trying to do it via Ethernet cable instead.

2) You should come to a page with information about your connection, click 'Advanced Settings' at the top and it will ask you to sign in with a Password. This is located on the back of your router under 'Admin Password'

3) Select the option for 'Wireless' followed by '5 GHz Wireless'.

4a) To split up the frequencies:

What we want to do to begin with is turn 'Sync with 2.4 GHz Wireless' to 'No' and update the SSID to be different. The easiest way would be to add '-5G' to the end so it is identified as its own connection.

4b) To disable the 5Ghz frequency:

On this page you'' need to turn 'Sync with 2.4 GHz Wireless' to 'No' followed by turning 'Wireless network enable' to 'No' also. If worked after pressing 'Apply' a wifi red light should appear on the router and the 2.4Ghz standard wireless channel still showing available on your devices.

Apologies that this isn't the answer you're looking for, but I hope this helps.

From 31st October 2022, I no longer have a regular presence here as I’ve moved on to a new role.

Re: Plusnet Hub Noise

Either use your hammer or keep it as an emergency spare. Go onto EBay and buy a BT Smarthub 6 for £20-30, I’ve never heard any complaints about noise and they have better WiFi performance. Setting up instructions are here  https://community.plus.net/t5/My-Router/Using-the-BT-Smarthub-6-on-a-Plusnet-Account/m-p/1587673#M85...

I think this may be the answer. I'll go grab my hammer Smiley

Re: Plusnet Hub Noise

Obviously Plusnet find it too hard to get the manufacturer to sort out this problem so have declared that the noise is 'within acceptable limits'. Whose limits I wonder? Plusnet's  I guess! And the solution? Turn off the 5GHz band so that half the router functionality is lost. It's totally unacceptable to my mind but I guess it's the price you have to pay when using a freebie router supplied by a budget ISP. Hopefully BT will soon make the Smarthub 2 their standard offering and Plusnet will start re badging and issuing the current Smarthub 6.

Interestingly it appears that this problem has been around for at least 5 years. You would have expected some solution by now! See https://community.bt.com/t5/Home-setup-Wi-Fi-network/Noisy-Home-Hub-5/td-p/1140090.

Re: Plusnet Hub Noise

@Baldrick1, not much I can share at the moment, but we are in continued dialogue with the device vendor about these reports.
