Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

Well! This new router doesn’t hiss, which is good
But it does randomly drop the WiFi or flashes orange then reboots

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

Hi @AnthTowers,

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing this issue. I've taken a look into your account today and although I can see that the connection dropped out a couple of times yesterday, the connection appears to have since stabilized. If further disconnections do occur I would recommend going through our online troubleshooting guide which can be found here and to also set the router up within the test socket in the property for which, another guide can be found here.

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

I’ve given up with these routers
I’ll wait until either it, or I explode then I’ll replace it with a decent one.

The router is connected via cat 6 to a netgear wireless access point in another room. The wireless performance from the netgear is far better, for both range and speed.
I know it’s a “free” router, but I’m amazed just how bad they are

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

I’ll be honest I’m at the point where I’d gladly move providers to get away from the routers. The noise on my replacement router is as bad as if not worse than the original. Whenever anything is causing load on the router it hisses like crazy and it’s driving me nuts.

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

I've been having the same issues like @AnthTowers with my router - it randomly drops and flashes orange... then my Alexa moans because she's got no internet!

Like you've suggested I'm going to try a few things but are you able to see what my droppage rate has been like for the past say... 2 weeks?

I'm also having dealing with the Case of the Hissing Router - I've gone through the advanced settings and diabled the 5GHz and reenabled but still it hisses :(.

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

Hey there @Tridley86 ,

Please follow these steps to disable the 5ghz and let us know if it helps:

1) To connect to your Hub One, you will need to open a browser and go to 192.168.1.254 If you have any issues doing this via Wireless, we recommend trying to do it via Ethernet cable instead.

2) You should come to a page with information about your connection, click 'Advanced Settings' at the top and it will ask you to sign in with a Password. This is located on the back of your router under 'Admin Password'

3) Select the option for 'Wireless' followed by '5 GHz Wireless'.

4a) To split up the frequencies:
What we want to do to begin with is turn 'Sync with 2.4 GHz Wireless' to 'No' and update the SSID to be different. The easiest way would be to add '-5G' to the end so it is identified as its own connection.

4b) To disable the 5Ghz frequency:
On this page you'' need to turn 'Sync with 2.4 GHz Wireless' to 'No' followed by turning 'Wireless network enable' to 'No' also. If worked after pressing 'Apply' a wifi red light should appear on the router and the 2.4Ghz standard wireless channel still showing available on your devices.

And last but not least, hi there @AlisiaB - We'd recommend leaving the 5ghz disabled, if it stopped the noise for you. If you're still experiencing the issue on the 2.4GHz frequency please let us know.

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

I'm pleased to say that one my replacement arrived it has solved the noise problem when using the 5ghz band.

The router appears to be exactly the same model, so there must be a fundamental hardware problem with some of them making the hissing/buzzing noise.

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

I have tried that and it does improve the noise but then the throughout of the WiFi is reduced . 2.4ghz is great if only one device is connected but 5 ghz is the preferred choice for multiple devices. Don’t really see this as a long term solution.

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

Hi @Tridley68 ,

There are certainly a few tweaks that can be done to improve your connectivity on the 2.4GHz, however please don't think that the 5GHz does not work or the noise poses any kind of risk to yourself.

When on 5GHz, are you experiencing issues with the connectivity, at all?

In order to optimise the 2.4GHz in the meantime, we'd recommend cycling through the WiFi channels, as the below instructions show:

The guide below will show you how to log into the router and change the wireless channel as it's usually another router in the area on the same or similar channel that will be causing issues for both wireless frequencies. Before picking a channel I'd suggest downloading a free app called wifi analyzer which will scan your area for all the routers and show what channels they are on between 1-13. Although the above app isn't essential it helps you pick where your router would be best in terms of channels and saves a lot of time doing it via trial and error.

What we want to do to begin with is turn 'Sync with 2.4 GHz Wireless' to 'Off' and update the SSID to be different. The easiest way would be to add '-5G' to the end so it is identified as its own connection. Once this is changed, we will need to keep an eye on it for a day or 2 to see if the issue continues. If it does, the next step would be to change the wireless channel. Keeping in mind the original 2.4Ghz unchanged name network connection would be the best to connect your devices to for a stronger signal.

4) Following the above guide to get to your 'Advanced Settings' page, you will need to change the settings within the 2.4 GHz Wireless tab and the 5 GHz Wireless tab.

5) Under the correct heading, you will need to find 'Channel Selection' on the list and change this from 'Automatic' to any one of the other channels, This can also need doing under '5 GHz Wireless' to cover both signals. Give it 3-4 hours of testing to see if the issue still persists and try to change the channel again if you see little or no improvement.

Please let us know how you get on, and if you experience any further issues, drop us another post.

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

Dropping 5ghz only reduces the noise not eliminates it entirely. When under load it still hisses. Seems to be a major flaw in the router hardware

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

Hi @bvardy, can you try a factory reset on the router please? If that doesn't change anything we'll arrange a replacement for you:

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

Hi @adamwalker,

Thanks for your swift response. Unfortunately, a factory reset has not reduced the hissing sound.

Please advise on next steps.

All the best,

bvardy

Re: Plus net router making hissing noise?

Hi @bvardy

Just wanted to share my experience. I had this issue with my router. After turning off the 5GHz it was still there. I got sent a replacement which has exactly the same problem. Its a known issue with Plusnet and it seems like the only way to fix it is to go elsewhere or buy your own router if you can't put up with the noise.
