Plus net router making hissing noise?

I can hear a noise coming from my router that sounds like hissing but when i listen closely to it it sounds like an old 56K modem but much faster electronic sound.

I have 3 devices on 5Ghz, my iphone SE, amazon fire stick and my dell laptop.

Is this a sign that my router is going down?

If you turn off the 5Ghz WiFi on the router, does the noise stop?

if so, this is a known issue with the Plusnet Hub One although no-one has been able to see if it is limited to either a certain batch from the factory or just random. Some users have had the router replaced, others haven't. It doesn't seem to be an indication of it failing though.

Hi @loony Sorry to hear you're having problems with your router making noise.

As per SpendLessTime's advice, if you turn off the 5Ghz network this should fix the problem for you.

1. Open an internet browser and type http://192.168.1.254 into the address bar
2. Press the 'Enter' or 'Return' key
3. Click on 'Advanced Settings'
4. Enter the admin password, which is on the card or the back of the router
5. Click on 'Continue to Advanced Settings'
6. Click on 'Wireless'
7. Select 'No' next to 'Wireless Network Enable'
8. Click 'Apply'

Prior to doing this @loony, make sure you have a LAN cable to hand as you will need to use it to re-enable the Wireless and you'll be without access unless you have other devices connected by cable.

I had that on a couple of Hub Ones. It was most evident on 5Ghz but not so much on 2.4Ghz.

I ended up replacing it with a TP Link VR600 off Amazon & that doesn't make any noises at all on either band.

What if i want to use the 5GHz network? Am I forced to put up with the hissing noise?

Hi dan1239 that shouldn't happen as normal with every Hub One so I'd still give it a try if you haven't already. If that does become an issue we can look at replacing it for you.

As has been said, it sounds like you have a faulty router and should be able to use it on 5Ghz (as you say you wish to) and hear no noise.

Hopefully PlusNet can arrange a replacement, and fair enough if they want the old one back to investigate the fault.

Hi, I have just joined Plusnet with fibre, and I am getting the same hissing noises upon downloads. I don't use a LAN cable connection, relying upon the 2.4/5GHz signal; hence to disable the 5GHZ would not be beneficial. What may I do please to remove the hissing noise from the router? Has there been any progress since last year? It didn't make the noise initially - we are now 3 weeks in.
