New Laptop will not connect.

I have a new Lenova ThinkPad but despite trying everything I can think off I cannot get it to connect to my Plusnet router. Every time I try I get a message saying "cannot connect to this network". I am not too literate with computers but reasonably able to get by.

Hi @highlandbill

Thanks for getting in touch.

Just to confirm - can you connect other devices to the router successfully using the same wifi network and the same router password?

Best wishs

Dave

Re: New Laptop will not connect.

Hi @highlandbill

Thanks for confirming.

Assuming you have the Hub One connected, could you try splitting out the wifi frequencies as detailed here and try connecting your new laptop to the 5ghz connection instead?

Thanks

Dave

Re: New Laptop will not connect.

I get a message saying "cannot connect to this network"

Had a similar experience recently myself

Connect via Ethernet only. Check for windows updates....

(though as yours is new, there could be quite a bit, that could take several hours)

Once up to date, then try WiFi.

Does it now connect?

Re: New Laptop will not connect.

Try flushing the Lenovo's DNS Cache.
How?
Press "Windows key & R key", simultaneously.
In box that pops up, enter "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quote marks.
Try wifi connecting again. If still no good, try restarting laptop.
Reboot computer.

Re: New Laptop will not connect.

Hi! I connected the Lenova to my PC with an Ethernet cable and hey presto! I was connected to the internet & all worked fine. Thanks for your advice ..but I have a further issue you may be able to help with. This is my 1st Laptop & obviously I bought it so I can carry it around and use it wherever I am when there is Wi Fi. The thing is that if it only works when connected to a computer by an Ethernet connection it is not functioning as a Lap Top? Sorry for such basic ignorance but how do I now use the Laptop when it is not connected to my PC?  Bill.

Re: New Laptop will not connect.

That's great news @highlandbill Smiley

I'm grateful you came back to let us know.

(a Windows update basically broke the wifi, until we completed the update via ethernet)

Have you restarted the laptop since the update, if not you need to do this

(on windows 10, click the lower window icon (lower left), click the power button, select restart)

Some laptops come with a wifi switch, are you sure it's switched to on?

Can you give us the model number, then I can have a look around for you?
