Hi

I have just switched to Plusnet fibre and I have both the Hub One and a D7000. I would like to continue to use the D7000 but the speed with the D7000 (around 18 mbps) is a lot slower than the Hub One (around 30 mbps). I had around 26/7 mbps when I was using the D7000 with BT.

Any thoughts from anyone?

Is 18 mbps the line speed reported by the D7000, or from running a speed test over ethernet or wifi ?

Can I suggest you log into your D7000 router and determine what the VDSL downstream and upstream link rates are reported by the D7000 ?

I don't own a D7000, but after a quick google, try this router web page:

From the image you uploaded, it looks fine.  I would expect download speed tests to return around 26mbps, and upload speed of around 1.8mbps (Note Plusnet Fibre Unlimited only offers a 2mbps upstream speed, not 10mbps as with BT Infinity 1)  ie. the download speed 'should' be similar to what you witnessed when you had BT, around 26mbps.

Can you run a speed test using a computer directly wired to an ethernet LAN port of your Netgear, so you can rule out wireless speed degradation issues ?

ie. visit   beta.speedtest.net  website using a web browser, and press the big GO button.

Thanks, Bill. Unfortunately, the wired speed is only just over 13 mbps. I've contacted Netgear and went through the basic trouble shooting. They have escalated to a higher level and I have a phone call arranged with them tomorrow. Hopefully, I have something positive to update after the call.

I presume you correctly entered your Plusnet username (eg. myname@plusdsl.net) and password into the D7000.  If details were wrong then there would 'normally' be no internet access at all though.

Assuming for the moment the D7000 is not faulty or mis-configured as it worked fine with BT Infinity, the only thoughts that come to mind that could produce slower speed test results are:

1. Something else connected to your network is suddenly consuming download bandwidth.

2. There are line errors or packet loss on the VDSL line seen by the D7000.

Is your D7000 plugged into an Openreach VDSL face plate, or are you using microfilters?

If there are DSL errors, I am wondering whether a Plusnet rep can check from their end?

And yet the Hub One is not affected which is puzzling....

It has access to internet, it is just the speed. The puzzling thing is that the speed is circa 30 mbps if I switched the router to the Plus Net Hub One; everything else is the same, no changes. So,

when you compare the D7000 between Plus Net and BT as broadbank provider, there is a speed difference; and

when you compare the D7000 and the Plus Net Hub One with Plus Net only as the provider, there is a speed difference.

Provided your Plusnet account username is stored in the D7000, it should have full access to services.  (Plusnet does have a temporary 'setup' account used by Hub One which I believe 'restricts' access and speeds. It is unlikely the D7000 could be using that temporary account though).

Perhaps next time you have the Hub One connected, log into the hub at 192.168.1.254.

Then navigate to Advanced Settings - > Broadband -> Connection.

Guessing if speed tests are reporting 30 mbps download, then the Downstream 'link' speed is around 32 mbps which is higher than the 28+ mbps reported by D7000 yesterday.

Different modem chipsets does often result in differences in 'link' speeds reported by the router.

When you moved from BT Infinity to Plusnet, your downstream 'link' speed stayed more or less the same when using D7000 (around 28+ mbps 'link' speed).  It just happens the Hub One connects at a higher link speed than D7000.  But it does not explain why the 'download' speed is so much lower than the 'link' speed when using the D7000.

(btw, Downstream 'link' speed reported by router minus about 5%, is roughly the maximum theoretical 'download' speed which you may see in speed tests under 'normal' working conditions).
