Modem Recommendations

Hi all,

So i have recently setup a Mesh router in my house (3 story) which is much better and i have no issues with, however im currently running it through the Hub One router with wifi turned off and as it has no modem mode, im looking to get a decent modem to replace it. Does anyone have any good recommendations that wont break my wallet?

Re: Modem Recommendations

If I was buying now then I'd get the new DrayTek Vigor 166

https://draytek.co.uk/products/business/vigor-166

Make sure to get the UK version that has model number "V166-K",

as some sold on Amazon and other places are EU specific and don't work in the UK.

Alternatively, I'm still happy with the older DrayTek Vigor 130

https://draytek.co.uk/products/business/vigor-130

There are other good modems available, but the DrayTek models I've mentioned allow you to achieve a connection MTU of 1500 whereas others I've used can only do 1492,  also the DrayTek modems do give you some control over the DSL line characteristics which can be useful to achieve optimal results.

Re: Modem Recommendations

@olivershields  There is long thread on the Kitz forum where the general consensus is that the Vigor 166 is a bit of a disappointment on FTTC, giving lower sync speeds and instability.

https://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,25203.0.html

Many users have given up and returned the modem. Others are trying to get updated firmware from Draytek with mixed results. I have never been a fan of Draytek devices, the modem stats are confusing, with Near End, Far End, Upstream, Downstream all a bit muddled up.

I use the old Openreach supplied Huawei HG612 3B on my FTTC service, I get full 80/20 sync and very few errors. It has the preferred Broadcom modem chipset and full stats are available by updating the firmware. (info on Kitz website)

Re: Modem Recommendations

Luckily ive had a look pretty much everywhere and cant find a Vigor 166 anywhere. Ive just ordered a HG612 3B off of eBay for £18 so ill see how that turns out.
