Re: Installing VPN

Nope, you’d have to get a new router that allows this.

Re: Installing VPN

Do you know what kind of router would allow it?

Re: Installing VPN

Something that supports or is flashed with DD-WRT would, but depends on how confident you are technically.
You could also get a Raspberry Pi and turn that into a VPN gateway.
What are you trying to achieve?

Except that all of the routers listed there don't have inbuilt modems, so you would also need a separate modem.

Re: Installing VPN

As pointed out by @MisterW , for ProtonVPN, you would need a new router which can run Openvpn protocol.  It usually involves buying a supported router and flashing it with third party software such as DDwrt, OpenWrt or a flavour of Tomato.

Some Asus routers support Openvpn protocol out of the box.  RT-AC86u can manage upto 75mbps openvpn speeds.  The low end discontinued RT-AC51u can do upto 12mbps openvpn speeds.  RT-AC57u v1 can do upto 19mbps but it requires installing 'modified' AsusWrt firmware which you can download from a russian website.

A modified used Home Hub 5A/Hub One running OpenWrt can achieve upto 10mbps openvpn speeds.  You can find them on eBay.

https://openwrt.ebilan.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=279

Using a modified HH5a/Hub One to run openvpn client on OpenWrt wouldn't be my first choice because it is 'underpowered'. Having said that, openvpn is reliable on HH5a.

Normally you can just wire the vpn router to existing ISP router. However, one Plusnet user reported on OpenWrt forum having issues getting openvpn (VPNbook, ProtonVPN, PureVPN) working on their PC and openvpn router through their Plusnet Hub One.  There is a workaround for openvpn UDP (not TCP) connections for the Hub One.  Still being investigated.

Some VPN providers such as ExpressVPN still support legacy vpn protocols such as PPTP and L2TP. For how long, no one knows.   They are less secure but vpn speeds are faster than openvpn. Almost any cable (no modem) router can be used out of the box.  Example using TPlink router with L2TP protocol.

You have not stated what content and in which country you wish to access.  Note that some services may block VPNs.
