I’m after recommendations for a replacement router that includes NAS

Hello hive mind of the Plusnet Forum, a favour please.

I’m after recommendations for a replacement router.

My priorities are, in order….

  • Compatibility with Plusnet
  • Ability to attach one or more hard disks via USB to use as NAS drives.
  • Speed
  • Ease of use setup / reliability.
  • Cost

Your collective wisdom is appreciated.

Ah yes, that bit of info would have helped wouldn't it.

I'm on fibre.

Here's a good place to start if you're looking for a single box solution http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,14436.0.html

Cheers. I did find that thread and have been studying the list, I'm suffering a little bit from not being able to see the woods for the trees with all the info in there.

I have the original BT modem so don't think I really need a single box solution however if a dedicated router only is going to serve my needs better.

BT stopped supplying ( and supporting ) the modem earlier this year, so if it fails you would need to replace it with something else. I suspect PN's answer would be to supply their current Hub One which cannot be configured as just a modem. All of those listed on the kitz link would be compatible with PN. For your requirements I suspect NAS performance is going to be the trickiest to evaluate since I'd be suprised if many people use that facility in anger.

Re: I’m after recommendations for a replacement router that includes NAS

Also most routers have a processor which can just about cope with the job of routing traffic and acting as a firewall with a few simple rules. So NAS functionality will impact their performance as a router.

Better to look for a proper NAS if you intend to use it for streaming movies etc from disk.

Yup, I have done a bit of reading elsewhere and that seems to be the considered view.

So, I have now a nice new Asus modem router, because why not, and have ordered a dedicated NAS solution to do that job.

Thanks for the feedback folks.

@marcusk

For what it is worth, I've been very pleased with my Western Digital "My Cloud". If my budget had been higher I might have gone for a Synology NAS.
