Hub One or ZyXEL VMG8524-B10A

Hub One or ZyXEL VMG8524-B10A. Which one is better?

I moved from John Lewis to Plusnet and there was an issue as I didn't install the Hub One. Once that was up and running I found connection speed dropped from 35Mbps to never more than 27.8Mbps. I was connected to PN when I got the last 35Mbps result.

Should I change back to the ZyXEL VMG8524-B10A or have PN dropped the speed?

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

AD.

Hi @surfindogg  I assume you mean a Zyxel 8324 not 8524 ?

Assuming that's the case , the Zyxel has a Broadcom modem chipset which is generally accepted as performing better than the Lantiq chipset in the Hub one.

Hi @MisterW

Oops! actually 8924! Didn't have my glasses on.

I think I might try to connect with the ZyXEL instead. I like the way it looks compared to the Hub One too.

Thanks for the reply MisterW.

Re: Hub One or ZyXEL VMG8524-B10A

I installed the ZyXEL VMG8524-B10A this morning and although pages are loading faster, speed is still around 25Mbps as opposed to the 35Mbps I was getting with John Lewis!

Not sure why PN can't provide the same speed as JLB!

Re: Hub One or ZyXEL VMG8524-B10A

Is that 25Mb the sync speeds or throughput reseults from a speed test ?

Could be that the reduced sync speeds from using the Hub one have caused the Profile to drop, it will take a while fro any increase in sync speed to raise the Profile back up

That was a speedtest result using the Speedtest app on my iPhone. Not sure how I check sync speeds! I will give it a couple of days to see if things improve.

I am also not getting the minimum 27.3Mbps guaranteed by PN when I joined.

@surfindogg

Speed tests should be done on a wired connection.

You could be getting the expected speed to the unit but WiFi problems reduce the speed you're seeing.

Not sure how I check sync speeds

Login to the router GUI and from the Menu , select System Monitor->xDSL Statistics . See page 285 of the manual here https://www.zyxel.com/za/en/uploads/images/VMG8924-B30A_V1.00-UG.pdf

Re: Hub One or ZyXEL VMG8524-B10A

Thanks MisterW,

VDSL Port Details Upstream Downstream
Line Rate: 7.948 Mbps 29.996 Mbps
Actual Net Data Rate: 7.918 Mbps 29.997 Mbps
Trellis Coding: ON ON
SNR Margin: 6.0 dB 9.6 dB
Actual Delay: 0 ms 0 ms
Transmit Power: 4.8 dBm 12.7 dBm
Receive Power: -7.5 dBm -14.9 dBm
Actual INP: 0.0 symbols 52.0 symbols
Total Attenuation: 12.4 dB 27.6 dB
Attainable Net Data Rate: 7.918 Mbps 40.755 Mbps

Order summary gave an estimated download speed of 31-40Mbps.

I have only ever used my iPhone Speedtest app to get results so the 35Mbps+ speeds I was getting with JLB would I presume have been similarly limited by wifi?

Thanks for the info both.

Re: Hub One or ZyXEL VMG8524-B10A

SNR Margin: 6.0 dB 9.6 dB

That downstream noise margin would indicate that the line has been banded, as the normal margin should be 6db. Leave the Zyxel connected and lets see if the DLM removes the banding.
