Hub 2 Returns 1.1.1.1 to all DNS Queries when DSL Down

HI,

I have a PlusNet Hub 2 and when the DSL circuit goes down it returns 1.1.1.1 to ALL DNS Queries (bbc.co.uk, google.com etc) instead of the proper "Request Refused"

The Hub shows:

          Connection: Disconnected

Broadband Primary & Secondary DNS: Blank

This is causing an issue with a Yale Alarm Hub that does not reconnect after getting an incorrect DNS Response.

Is there a way fix the incorrect DNS behaviour of the Hub 2.

Thanks,

Nigel

@OldBoy3  Welcome to the Plusnet Community Fora.

Can’t comment on the hub, but can you set your choice of DNS resolver in the alarm hub settings? This should over tide the hub ones.

Re: Hub 2 Returns 1.1.1.1 to all DNS Queries when DSL Down

@OldBoy3 if @Baldrick1 s suggestion isnt possible , then you could try setting the DNS servers on the Hub 2. I think its In Hub Two manager/My Network/IPV4 configuration. Maybe use google or OpenDNS.

This should ensure that the Smart Hub doesnt use the DNS relay in the Hub 2 but sends DNS requests directly to the configured servers.

NB it will affect ALL devices connected to the Hub, they will all use the specified DNS servers

Re: Hub 2 Returns 1.1.1.1 to all DNS Queries when DSL Down

Unfortunately the Yale Hub Network Settings are tied down DHCP Only.

I have a second router between the Hub 2 and my LAN that provides DHCP services to the LAN I can not set the DNS Servers on the DHCP Server (not too clever).

So at the moment I can not change the DNS Setting on the Yale Hub

@MisterW @Baldrick1 Thanks for the suggestions.

The PlusNet Hub2 is already configured with Google DNS Servers.

@OldBoy3 in that case I suggest using the Hub 2 as the DHCP server instead.

Re: Hub 2 Returns 1.1.1.1 to all DNS Queries when DSL Down

Fix

@MisterW @Baldrick1

Thanks for the suggestions it gave the the hint to fix the issue.

My setup is now like this:

PlusNet Hub2: IPv4 Config set with Google DNS 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4

DLink Router: WAN Interface set to DHCP and gets assigned Google  DNS from Hub2

DLink Router: configured with DHCP Relay disabled, this makes it pass the received Google DNS Servers to its DHCP Clients

Yale Hub: DNS now set to 8.8.8.8.

Disconnected DSL Line from Hub2, now the DNS requests from the Yale Hub fail and it goes into a recovery loop

Reconnect DSL Line Yale Hub recovers

Tanks for your help.
