HUB One not playing SSH with Raspberry Pi over PuTTY

Hi,

Having trouble using my pi3 remotely when not at home.  Set up the Hub One with the pi and SSH server as recognised applications/devices and with a static IP on the router, but still can't log when in Germany using PuTTY.

Helps?

@only1symo

Apologies for blindingly obvious suggestions but:

You have a static IP address or some other way of knowing the IP address of your Hub One?

Has this ever worked before? I assume you tested it from "outside" your network before you went abroad.

I tried port forwarding on the Hub One to another router (inside) and couldn't make it work.

I doubt the Pi will respond to ping without you putting it in the router's DMZ and fiddling with the Pi's iptables (in fact, could the latter be what's blocking your SSH attempts?)

From first hand experience I know that what you're trying to do it definitely achievable.

 @bobpullen

Yes, I came to that conclusion very quickly and edited the post!

I can't immediately think of a way of confirming how far the connection gets as the Hub One discards ping as far as I know.

How long are you away for? If I get a spare minute, I can open up ping on the Hub to make sure you're able to get that far.

Also, this all feels very insecure. Personally I would use a router that supports an inward VPN connection.

@bobpullen

How did you make a Pi on a Hub One work?

Re: HUB One not playing SSH with Raspberry Pi over PuTTY

Fix
Forwarded the port and allowed external SSH connectivity with an iptable rule. If you're planning on leaving the Pi open to the Internet, I'd suggest looking at something like fail2ban too.
