Firmware issue - Nvidia Shield

Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.259 Last updated 19/03/19

There has been a recent update to the firmware for the routers which seems to be causing an issue with the Nvidia shield (android tv)

As soon as the device now connects to the router, the router falls over and dies, entering a reboot loop and sometimes completely losing all its settings (like a factory reset)

Plus.net have already replaced the router with a new one to see if its the old router, but the same thing happens with the new one:

  1. Stable connection at about 24mb using fast.com on a laptop
  2. repeat a few times to make sure its stable
  3. connect the nvidia shield using wps (or password)
  4. watch the connection speed from the laptop as the shield is connecting, it declines
  5. after the shield connects the connection speed for the laptop drops to 0
  6. Router heats up
  7. Router freezes, not even the admin (192.168.1.254) is accessible
  8. Router reboots after a few minutes, sometimes multiple times before the it becomes stable
  9. Wireless devices attempt to reconnect
  10. Repeated crashing until shield is told to forget the network
  11. Router comes back up and returns to stable state

The shield used to work fine with the router and it has had no software updates recently since it last worked

Logs show reset reason

( 14.440000) Boot reason: watchdog reset (cause: 0x0)

But there is a huge gap in the logs from where the shield connects (it doesnt even log the shield connection) until the reboot

help!

Re: Firmware issue - Nvidia Shield

Welcome to the forums @iphpdev

There is an update, and you have it based on the date. However, the firmware is actually 4.7.5.1.83.8.263

This should be an automated process, which can take 24 hours from when the update was sen to the router. But it does sound like you router isn't happy.

I would try disconnecting the TV, then if you have made any changes to the routers settings, then back then up.

It might then be worth carrying out a factory reset - press and hold the reset button on the rear for around 20 seconds, until the blue light goes off, then release the button and allow 5-10 mins for the hub to settle. This can sometimes cause the update to 'kick in' faster.

You can then restore your settings back onto the hub.

Then check to see if the firmware is as above. Then reconnect the TV.

That event log, to me, looks normal. Here's the 'codes'

0x0 - normal watchdog reset
0x1 - watchdog reset caused by wireless PCI failure
0x2 - watchdog reset caused by kernel not responding to interrupts
0x3 - Returned if both bits 0x1 and 0x2 are set.

The above is only advice Wink

Re: Firmware issue - Nvidia Shield

This most recent test was done with a new out-the-box router, but the same issue applied to both the old router and this new router,

It does look like this router needs the update but im not sure if the minor update would solve this issue?

Thanks!

Re: Firmware issue - Nvidia Shield

The hiccup might be purely down to timing (and now out of date records, perhaps)

They allocate the routers to our account/connection based on the serial number, but you've just had another router.

IIRC they 'kill' the old router off the account and update with the newer serial number - but Plusnet have been having 'teething' problems atm.

You're latest router (.259) is put in a queue type system, separate to older routers, and your newer one should update off the back of the 'other' queue.

This could be why it's not a happy bunny.

The advice above regarding the factory reset can work, as can simply powercycling it.

As your previous router could be is 'stuck' in the system, this might also be why the newer one isn't updating.

Having said that, it could/should auto update and I don't know why the Android TV is knocking the router over. I know Bob Pullen is the man you need if it doesn't update, maybe he'll either see this thread or a member of staff can 'tap him on the shoulder' to see what his thoughts are.

Does seem odd...

Re: Firmware issue - Nvidia Shield

Thanks for highlighting this, @iphpdev

@bobpullen - have you come across this with the latest firmware at all?

Best wishes

Re: Firmware issue - Nvidia Shield

	Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.263

The firmware updated overnight, however the issue with the shield still remains.

I tried over cable also, rather than wifi, and it still happens, its as if the router cant handle the device any more, which doesnt make sense as its only really a variation on Android 7

@iphpdev - it's a bit of a head scratch situation I'll give you that.

I'll try and link in with @bobpullen or one of the other products guys and get some advice.

So sorry about this.

Kind Regards,
