Difficulty getting wifi on laptop

so it's connect to wifi

can you open terming (cmd+space and type 'terminal' into spotlight)
then try:
ping bbc.co.uk

and paste the results here

Hi Dvorak. Have typed terminal in spotlight and got search results I need various headings (images, bookmarks etc.  I don’t see where to “ping bbc.co.uk”

ok, in finder go into your Applications folder and then in there got into the Utilities folder.
You'll see Terminal in there.

that'll give you a black box with a flashing cursor.
you can type the ping command there.

And it's still saying not connected to Internet?? Have you checked if safari can find bbc.co.uk? Have you tried a different browser?

yeah, that shows that the laptop is connected to the internet.
so issue may be with Safari.
Do you have another browser you can try?

Just installed Firefox. Still not connecting. What next?

Anything set under Network > Advanced > Proxies?

Try the troubleshooter
1)Hold option and click the Wi-Fi icon in your menu bar.
2)Select Open Wireless Diagnostics… from the drop-down menu.
3)Follow the onscreen prompts to complete your diagnostics.

Ok got it.  Diagnostics came up with Custom IPv4 Settings - “switching to DHCP May fix” and it seems to have done. Thanks for your help.
