Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Hello all

My connection speed is good but I've been having drop outs in connection on various devices. I thought it was a wifi cold spot causing it so I got an Asus mesh system for better coverage, and connected it as an access point to my PlusNet router over the weekend, turning off wireless on my PlusNet router. It seems to do the job of boosting signal around the house for multiple devices brilliantly. However today is the first working day and I'm getting lots more drop outs affecting various devices with no discernible pattern. Why? It's no problem when it affects doorbells and so on but on work calls, it's a nightmare.

The event log is below and I had 2 or 3 drop outs on my work laptop in the time listed below, but my laptop isn't one of the IP addresses in the log. Other devices seem to be disconnected/reconnected. Any ideas about what is going on? I'm bamboozled.

Thanks

James

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Hi James,

Seems odd, is your Wi-Fi mesh dual band (2.4GHz and 5GHz)? If so which wireless frequency are your devices connecting to when they’re dropping?

This is my personal Community Forum account to help out around these parts while I'm at home. If I'm posting from the 1st March 2020, this means I'm off-duty with no access to internal systems.

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Thanks Anoush.

They drop on 2.4GHz and 5GHz, and my work laptop is plugged into a mesh node with wireless backhaul, and that drops too.

In the middle of the night I came up with a new theory - I have a security camera system plugged into a powerline via an old router which is set up as an access point. I'm disconnecting that today to see if we get any more drops. I'm not convinced the disconnect/reconnect pattern in the event log is the cause any more as the timing in the log doesn't precisely match the drops.

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Another update - the disconnections in the event log are not causing the instability and drop outs. Unfortunately the other router isn't the cause either because I'm on a call now and it has dropped a couple of times for about 10-15 seconds, in the same way as it did before.

So I'm back to the same situation I've had for months now.

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Thanks for getting back to me James,

Is it possible to setup your wireless mesh as a router, taking the Hub One out of the equation in the off chance that's affecting it? Also if you disconnect your mesh altogether and use the Hub's Wi-Fi do you get drops still?

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Thanks Anoush. I did have the same problem using just the hub without the mesh... I hoped getting the mesh would fix it but if anything, it's worse (even though the speed is better).

I didn't know I could use the mesh as a router and take out the hub. I will give that a try when I can... will have to make sure I set it up correctly too.

Thanks

James

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Ah I see, no problem James. Not all mesh's can be used as a router though.

For example I've got a Linksys wireless mesh I'm using as one (Currently on it at the moment. Working from home)

Let us know how it goes

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

We splashed out on the Asus ZenWifi XT8 to future-proof things a little, and I'm sure that's essentially two hefty Asus routers so hopefully will work. Ironically I had a 20-second drop-out while I was waiting for the text box for this reply to appear...

Will try it as soon as I can.

Ah nice. Fingers crossed it can work as a router.

I remember the issues trying to get the Linksys mesh working with the Hub One, in the end we just let it do all the work.

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

@jamespharding  The Asus can work as a router but it doesn't have a built in VDSL2 modem so cannot be connected to the phone line. It needs an external stand alone modem such as the Huawei HG612 3B which used to be supplied by Openreach and used ones are still available on auction sites. I have used one for years on my FTTC service with no problems.

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Thanks @RealAleMadrid - that's helpful.

I've got the fastest fibre option and an expensive mesh network so I'd still like to find a way to fix this without having to spend more time and money on more hardware and more setting up though. Is there something else I could try?

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Strangely it's actually getting worse for my work laptop - dropping out every couple of minutes and for 10-15 seconds at a time tonight during a call with the US. It's fine, then disconnects, then connects and renews its lease - with no pattern or trigger I've seen to prompt that. When it's connected it's great but I can't hold work calls like this.  Sad

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Good morning @jamespharding

All of the tests on the line that I've carried out on our side have shown no issue with the network itself. Saying that, I've sent out a new Plusnet Hub One to the address registered on the account to see if this helps to resolve the issues that you're having. This can take around 3-5 working days to arrive. Please let us know how you get on with it and we'll be happy to follow up.

Re: Device disconnections and drop outs but speed is good so why?

Thanks for this. Hopefully this solves it - I was getting the same problem with my work laptop in my previous job, which finished last month, so it doesn't seem to be the devices. Hopefully a new Hub One will resolve it.
