Cable and connectors from Hub router to desktop PC

Hi all. Just signed up to plusnet and while setting up discovered I need a longer cable to connect my desktop PC to the Hub One router. Can anyone tell me precisely what cable with what connectors I need? (More below on why this isn’t as stupid a question as it might appear).

I tried using a 5e ethernet cable that was until a few days ago used to connect a router (from my old ISP) to the wall socket microfilter. This seemed to fit the sockets in the Hub and PC, but I couldn’t connect, although WiFi was working fine. I noticed the connectors on this cable are different (narrower) to those on the cable supplied by plusnet. When I buy a longer cable, how do I make sure that the new one has the correct connectors? Googling around indicates that my old cable might have RJ11 connectors, while I need RJ11. I s this correct? 40 minutes on the phone to plusnet customer services got me nowhere.

RJ11 is the cable between the filter and the DSL socket on the router.

RJ45 or ethernet should be used between your PC and the LAN port on the router.

Not sure what you are tring to but sounds like mixing the cables uo,

Fix

@InverL Welcome to the forum.  🙂

I tried using a 5e ethernet cable that was until a few days ago used to connect a router (from my old ISP) to the wall socket microfilter.

That's an ADSL/VDSL cable.

What you need is an ethernet patch cable like this:

Thanks both. I meant to say that I think the old one had RJ11 connectors, and what I need uses *RJ45* connectors. Your replies confirm this, thanks for the help.

Re: Cable and connectors from Hub router to desktop PC

Just for clarification: on the more recent faceplates, the DSL socket is wider than older ones, so an RJ11 to RJ45 cable is a better fit.

Thanks. I was also thinking of replacing the flat white microfilter-to-modem cable that plusnet sent with a shorter (better?) one. This seems to be what the cables in your link above would do, if I’m understanding you correctly. I’ll check to see if an RJ45 would fit my microfilter.

Re: Cable and connectors from Hub router to desktop PC

Sorry, my bad, I was mixing up this thread with another.

If you're using a microfilter, then those all have RJ11 DSL sockets.

Same link, but scroll down past the RJ45-RJ11s to the RJ11-RJ11s.

Good idea to replace the flat cable though.  🙂
