2740n - can you use this router instead of a usb wireless adapter?

Hi there.

I have moved two PCs (a desktop and a headless server) to a room that has no ethernet port - this is something that I hope to add in a few months' time.

I was thinking of buying a couple of cheap USB wireless adapters but came across a few internet pages that suggested you could use unused routers to connect PCs to your home network (I have read this being referred to as bridge mode).

I have a spare 2740n to hand but a google search has revealed loads of conflicting information on this:

1. It just will not work

2. It can work if you start re-soldering the internal motherboard

3. It can work if you start adding custom (or updated) firmware

4. If can work out of the box if you can access hidden setting on the router

I would be grateful for some advice on what the current position is for this little device.

You can do it without difficulty.

First you log into the router expert mode, see. https://community.plus.net/t5/My-Router/Sagemcom-2704N-as-wired-access-point-switch/m-p/1534635#M632...

Next make the necessary changes, see https://community.plus.net/t5/Tech-Help-Software-Hardware-etc/Quick-Question-Re-2704n-as-access-poin...

Not sure that's right.

My reading of what the OP wants to do is to use the 2704n to join the existing wireless network and connect the PC's via ethernet, rather than turn it into an additional access point. The above instructions turn it into an access point.

Ah, I have never tried using a router in this mode, time to experiment methinks.

Surely all that @elsmandino needs is a wireless extender that includes an Ethernet port such as https://www.amazon.co.uk/RE200-Universal-Extender-Broadband-Indicator/dp/B00KVD6CJY/ref=dp_ob_title_...

Thanks for that - as dvorak says, I wanted to use the router as it if it were a wireless adapter.

I might have to consider one of those extends, but they have the issue of only having a single ethernet port, whereas I need two (plus I was hoping to put to good use, a device that I already had, lying around).

You could connect the Hub Zero in Access Point mode to the wireless extender to give you three Ethernet ports.
