Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

Are you running these speed tests with no devices using the broadband/wireless apart from the device you're running the speed test on?

Bit stumped if you are and I can only really put it down to interference. Seems unlikely to be a faulty router if you're getting higher speeds on both ethernet and 5GHz. Undecided

Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

There are several devices connected but asleep but only one actively being used.

Nowhere does it state that there is any limitation on the number of devices connected at once.

I will try to disconnect all but the testing device tomorrow

Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

If you're running a speed test when a device is for example streaming that's going to affect the test result because that device would be using some of the bandwidth.

[edit]

I'd suggest carrying out the steps explained at: http://speedtest.btwholesale.com before running a test. Obviously you can ignore the part about testing on an ethernet connection in this instance because we're just trying to get to the bottom of your wireless issue. Let me know how it goes.

Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

I don’t think this is a case of just having a split difference between 2.4 and 5Ghz.

You also have different network rates for 2.4Ghz WiFi. My guess is your devices on 2.4 are only capable of 802.11g which is 54mbps on a good strong signal with no interference. Some devices may be 802.11n which is 150mbps but you’re never going to get full speed over 2.4 as there is too many factors.

I’d say 45mbps is actually really good for 2.4Ghz.

Only way you will get full speed is 5Ghz on AC WiFi.

Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

@Gtunney I have just run a speed test from Asus laptop and get ~43mps, the network properties state 802.11n

Nothing is streaming

does that change your view?

Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

Not really I’d still say 43mbps is what I’d expect for 2.4Ghz Wireless N.

Our playstations upstairs connect over 2.4GHz and they can only get 6MBps (48mbps) on downloads.

Can you do a transfer of a large file from laptop to another on 2.4Ghz and see what you get?

Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

If you are right, surely the ISP should warn us that we are paying for 76 but will not get that over wifi on non 5ghz devices.

Just checked my phone spec and that it 802.11b/g/n and tat just gave me 43 mps

Are you using the standard PN Hub One router? I have read elsewhere that a 'better branded' router might fix it

Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

No I'm afraid they don't as I had the exact same issue with Sky, I was paying for 80/20 fibre but my router could only handle 20mbps over WiFi so I hacked my sky hub and got my own router.

Im using a Netgear D7000 which is an AC1900 WiFi router. I can get 350+ mbps to my iPhone but that is running 5Ghz AC WiFi.

Depending on the amount of devices you have you could buy a 5Ghz AC WiFi adapter for the laptop instead of a new router.

Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

What speed do you get on 2.4 on your netgear router?

I am thinking of a DD-WRT router so that I could load my VPN on it to protect everything on my network, but if the 2.4 speed won't go up I may think again

I curently have up to 8 wifi devices with only 3 capable of 5ghz

Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

Just set my laptop to 2.4Ghz 300mbps wireless N and I've just  got the  below on a Local LAN test.

Download
97.71
Mbps

Upload
83.34
Mbps

Internet test  over 2.4Ghz I've just got 47mbps down and 18mbps but I'm  having issues with my line at the moment and can't get above 50mbps even on 5Ghz when it comes to internet.

Re: 2.4 Ghz much slower than 5 Ghz

I have switched of everything wifi (except laptop I'm using) in the house - TV, Echo, smart plugs, phones, wife's iPad,  but still my 2.4 connections show 3 unknown connections:

Devices currently connected to your Plusnet Hub:
Network Device MAC Address IP Address
2.4 GHz Wireless: DESKTOP-UVBJ7QM   19
  dhcpcd-6-8-2-Linu...   192.1
  ESP_BEDCD3   192.1
  ESP_BE9DE7   192.1
5 GHz Wireless: No devices detected
Ethernet: No devices detected
USB: No devices detected

Any idea what they are? Could they be slowing things down?Huh
