Re: Sanctuary warden alarm system

@New_ff2025 If the alarm has a SIM card, it does not need the landline, which will be inactive anyway.

Re: Sanctuary warden alarm system

To those offering advice here "do you have VoIP" - surely no alarm service 'uses' VoIP as such - if it works without a POTS service, then either it has its own network connection and will work over any service (with or without VoIP) or as hinted at over SMS assuming decent mobile network connectivity.

... or am I missing something?

I don't think you are missing anything. @Townman - systems working off a SIM  card are independent of ANY 'phone' connection.

Re: Sanctuary warden alarm system

I'm just surprised that Sky didn't ask all these questions about the alarm system when they installed Fibre and disconnected the landline!

@jab1
I migrated to sky full fibre about a year ago and they do ask all those questions. It was like going through an interview process 😉

Re: Sanctuary warden alarm system

Sky haven't disconnected the land line as I have a phone and broadband package with them at the moment but Plusnet will disconnect it when I'm live with them

OK @Protech . They've obviously improved over years, but I personally still wouldn’t touch them with an extended bargepole.

Re: Sanctuary warden alarm system

@New_ff2025 As your alarm has a SIM, that would have no effect on it.

Thank you for your reply. Sky uses voIP which I'm using at the moment. Plusnet doesn't use voIP. I don't want to spend more on VOIP services as by the time all the costs are added I may as well stay with sky

By common parlance "land line" is not VoIP.  If as you state, Sky is using VoIP then it is not likely that the alarm service is using a "landline" (POTS / PSTN) service and thereby not using VoIP either.

There is though a lot of space for confusion: Sky has been transitioning voice services for a while.  If your telephone / devices plug direct to the incoming line, then you are indeed on a POTS / PTSN 'landline' service, NOT VoIP.  If the telephone plugs into to the router, then you are VoIP.

Re: Sanctuary warden alarm system

@New_ff2025 A quick (very quick) look at the manual for your system suggests it can run over a traditional PSTN  or cellular one. You need to check how yours is connected, but if you are on SKY FTTP, over the BT network, you won't have a PSTN connection.

Sky will have disconnected the physical landline if your telephone service is provided as a VOIP service. Your telephone now plugs into the back of the Sky router , is that correct ?

You refer earlier to the 'Tynetec Advent XT', that is a dedicated local alarm system designed for grouped housing assisted living schemes. It has its own dedicated wired network connected back to (typically) a wardens office. It sometimes also has a radio receiver to receive alerts from RF emegency pendants.

If I'm correct, then I would have thought your warden would be the best source of information to determine whether your system actually uses the landline phone at all.

Re: Sanctuary warden alarm system

@MisterW Thanks, reading that manual a little more, I realised that, and was going to come back. My initial comments were based on me thinking it was more like a council-provided service.

Re: Sanctuary warden alarm system

Hi, yes the phone connects to the back of the sky router. The exact model is Tynetec ZXT201.
Thank you
