Moving from Virgin to Plusnet

Hello,

My brother is looking to move to Plusnet from Virgin for phone and broadband. Can he keep his original phone number? And does he need to contact Virgin to cancel (he has been with them for years) or can he just swap using a site like USwitch?

Also, does he need to have the installation as I assume he can't use the Virgin socket? Is that correct?

Any advice would be much appeciated.
