Had text to say cant transfer phone no

Ive had the same phone number for over 30 years first with BT then Talktalk. I was encouraged to switch to Plusnet by my family after poor service from Talktalk. Having checked and confimred I could take my number I am now told I cant take my number. If this is the case then Im afriad I need to cancel as changing my number is red line I dont want to cross.
