When do I get my free months for a referral?

I recently referred someone (through the special link and used the code for 3 free months).
I see no mention of this in my current referrals. How do I know that this is in effect and when it starts?

But they get 3 months free? So is it when they pay the activation fee?

It's actually based on when the referred account becomes active, despite of whether a payment is due for the first month's subscription or not.

So I guess it will be a month after the activation date.
I see the referral in the current list but no mention of the free months

In a sense yes, it will take effect on the next billing date following the activation of the referred account.
