I need to upgrade to the 60GB package from the 10GB one, but would like to know if this would start a new 12 month contract or if it would just run for the remainder of my current one which has 4 months to go.

It would have no effect on your current 12 month contract which is related only to various freebies such as router, activation, etc. not to the actual notice period for phone or broadband which is only 10 days
