Old Account with active Website and email. Would Like to Access to move the domain but can't access.

Hi All,

I am a bit lost in the weeds with this one.

I used to have an plusnet account when I was at uni 20 years ago. At the time I made use of the free webhosting and email to host www.fozza.co.uk
It was mainly used for emails and still is today. When I left uni I moved onto a £4.99 a month package just for website and email and paid that for years.
I have now come back to plusnet a couple of years ago and thought I had started up the service on the same £4.99 account .
This is not the case and that old account is now dormant although emails are still working. Recently things have been failing to send from mobile and people as saying they are getting emails bounced back to them.

To this end I would like to pull the website and email hosting from plusnet and pay to have it somewhere else. However I can't find anyway to do this ? The site an emails are pointing to ns1.force9.net which I think is plusnet?

When I log in with my old credentials it says there is a change in place so nothing can be done with the account.

It also shows an old address and an AOL.com email account 😂😂😂😂😂

Could anybody point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Chris

@fozza101 from your screen dumps, it would appear that your doamin is hosted by Plusnet ( nameservers set to force9 ) but is registed by Easily as shown by Registrar in the whois report.

In order to transfer your domain you will need to request that Easily change the IPSTAG to your new registrar.

Re: Old Account with active Website and email. Would Like to Access to move the domain but can't acc

Thanks Mister W

Appreciate the assitance.
I think I will be changing to Namescheap unless anybody has any other suggestions.
I am really new to this and not really sure what I am asking for, so a couple of additional questions if I may.

Currently I can put anything I like in front of the @Fozza.co.uk part of the email and they all come through to the same inbox. This has been useful to see where spam originates from as I always change the email based on who I am giving it to. So sportsdirect@fozza.co.uk or serventrentwater@fozza.co.uk etc . Is this a standard feature with domain emails or do I need to be asking for something special from the next host to do this?

Also if I ask namescheap to transfer in the domain, and ask easily to change the isptag do plusnet need to be involved ? Also how long with that take to propergate and will emails then just be available through the namescheap email servers or is that another job to set up?

Sorry for all the questions but I am clueless and grateful for any knowledge you can send my way.

Cheers

@fozza101

Why would you transfer a .co.uk domain to a USA company? Many of us use https://www.mythic-beasts.com/

Hey Baldrick

Lol Simple answer to that is, ignorance and I don't know what I don't know. Names cheap has UK and Euro data centres and seemed cheap.

I have no website so no need to really worry about latency back and forth for traffic so I am guessing the only benefit would be keeping my email data secure and under UK data laws?

As I say, happy to learn and improve my ignorance so all advise very much appreciated. 🙏

"Recently things have been failing to send from mobile "

If you are off Plusnet's network (say using a mobile connection" and use the Plusnet SMTP server  you need to authenticate when sending.

Have a look at this:

Re: Old Account with active Website and email. Would Like to Access to move the domain but can't acc

Thanks Mark,

Yeah I tried troubleshooting that a while back and added the additional file thingy for gmail accounts that were bouncing etc. That sorted things for a while but then randomly it will stop and fails to authenticate when I do the smtp things. Now it is bouncing incomng mail so I am going to cut my loses and change email providers.

With it being connected to an old legacy account that I am not even being billed for I think it is probably wiser to move it anyway.

Cheers for the help though, its appreciated.

@fozza101 to answer some of your questions above

Also if I ask namescheap to transfer in the domain, and ask easily to change the isptag do plusnet need to be involved ?

No

Also how long with that take to propergate and will emails then just be available through the namescheap email servers or is that another job to set up?

Transferring the domain registration won't make the emails available via namecheap. Email hosting is separate from domain registration as you can see from your current situation, your domain is registered at Easily but is hosted by Plusnet. Some domain registrars include a basic email redirection but I wouldnt rely on that as many will not conform to SPF requirements.

Some email hosting providers charge on a per mailbox basis whereas other allow unlimited mailboxes. Its often unclear whether alias or forwarding addresses are included.

The Mythicbeasts option sugested above is very similar in functionality to the Plusnet mail, it allows unlimited mailboxes and aliases, subject to an overall storage limit of 2Gb for its base product. It includes SPF & DKIM support. Spam detection is a litlle basic but can be tailored using EXIM filters if you are technically aware.

For info , the basic email only package is £20/yr if you pay annually and domain registration is £7.20/yr. If you need more storage then there are other pacakges (which also include web hosting if required)

Re: Old Account with active Website and email. Would Like to Access to move the domain but can't acc

@fozza101 dont rush into things, do some research and start to understand the process.

Transferring the email will be a multi-stage process.

1)You first transfer the domain registration, that does not change the namservers , so your email is still hosted by Plusnet.

2) You create an account with your new email provider, create any mailboxes and aliases. At this time mail is still being handled by Plusnet.

3) At some point you use the domain DNS tools of your new registrar to switch the nameservers to your new email provider. Mail will now start to be directed to the new provider. This is the part that causes some issues in that the change takes time to propagate, so some mail will still go to PN and some to the new provider.

You also need to consider whether you need to transfer old emails from PN to your new provider. If you use IMAP to access the mails then they are stored on the PN servers and so you will either need to copy them to local storage on your email client or copy them to the new providers system. This also gets more complicated during the propagation period when email is potentailly going to old or new servers. If you dont have lost of mail/mailboxes then you can just have both old & new accounts open using an email client and copy between them. If you have many mailboxes and/or emails then have a look at https://imapsync.lamiral.info/ for an automated copy facility.
