Offer to move to EE Full Fibre

I have just received an email offering to move my Broadband to EE Full Fibre for the same amount i am paying now

I'm currently on Unlimited Fibre 38 - 40Mb with a phone line, If I go ahead what will my new speed be.

I want to keep my phone line and number and see online that EE charge £2.80 extra per month for this, will I be charged this extra as my current plan includes a phone line.

PN will move you to EE free of charge if it's done through them. Been that way for a while.

 

EE phone services will be VOIP.  If you stay with PN then you need to organise your own VOIP provider. It's easiest to move as the change to VOIP should be relatively pain free whereas going to an independant VOIP provider would almost certainly involve a few days down time on the phone plus you may need to purchase an ATA to work with your current phone.

 

You can check online with PN as to what they can offer price wise for Full Fibre or give the PlusNet Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 a phone.

Edit : The minimum speed on Full Fibre is 78 down. You get near this on Full Fibre

Another current consideration is - do you use PN email or any other add on available in the past?

 

Although PN are crrently migrating these services to a third party if it's not occured for you before you move to EE you'd lose them.

 

Once the migration is complete you can move and retain what you have. For email the cost would be £15 a year - not certain of other costs for webspace etc.

Thanks for the replies, no I don't have anything other than Broadband, moving to EE would be good as I should be able to keep my landline number and plug my existing analogue phone straight into EEs router, I will give them a call

The other thing to consider is are you near the end of your contract? If so, there are other ISP's who offer both internet and VOIP. Zen Internet is one and is well regarded.

Fair enough. If you're happy with the EE offer just make sure it includes free movement from PN. If not, get PN to organise it.

 

The other thing to remember is VOIP does not work during power cuts. If this matters you need back up power for both the router and ONT.

It's not clear to me why you are being offered this.

Clearly you want to keep your landline but Plusnet are contracted to provide this for another 18 months.

Is there some other driver for the change?

You will get whatever speed EE offer with full fibre (unlike copper delivered broadband) and a router with a phone socket for your landline.

Unless you value a broadband speed increase (or have reliability issues) I would sit the Plusnet contract out.

Maybe Openreach pushed back on doing a repair, as they have been short of spare parts for a while now - making it increasingly difficult to fix landline voice problems on obsolete equipment, and knowing that landline phones are scheduled to be phased out in just five months time , it would seem reasonable to encourage customers with PSTN phone faults to upgrade to VoIP - as that makes the problem "go away" at no cost, and that any customer wanting to continue using their landline number should probably be moving to VoIP about now anyway.

The very last exceptions are to be phased out in 2027 - those lines where there are care alarms or other reasons VoIP isn't suitable. The vast majority will be phased out much sooner.

Migrating millions of customers from PSTN to VoIP can't all be done on the last day, so ISPs will be migrating customers as soon as possible (typically at contract renewal) to spread the effort. Plusnet don't offer VoIP so don't have the migration effort, but they will have the task of encouraging customers that want to keep a land line number to move to EE. For customers who don't care about a land line they can simply move them to SOGEA.

Their offer is to transfer me to EE for the same cost, As I am still in contract and have a phone with evening and weekend calls are they obliged to move me to EE with the same features included

January 2027 is the final deadline when Openreach actually switch off the analogue phone system.

 

Openreach's target for migrating residential phone customers to VoIP has always been 31st December 2025.

After Government intervention, because it was discovered that some vulnerable customers that use health alarms connected via the analogue phone system would need extra time to get their alarms to be replaced with alternative solutions, Openreach extended the deadline to January 2027 specifically for those difficult cases, but the original target for migrating residential phone customers stayed the same.

Therefore the timescales go something like this -

  • now until 31st Dec 2025 : phone providers are supposed to migrate PSTN customers to VoIP
  • 1 Jan 2026 anyone still on PSTN will get 90 day notice of phone contract ending
  • 1 Jan 2026 to 31 Mar 2026 : remaining PSTN phones move to VoIP, and xDSL lines converted to SoGEA or SoADSL
  • 2026 Openreach taskforce implement temporary technical solutions such as SoTAP to convert remaining analogue lines used for control situations (like lifts, water monitoring, and weather stations) by emulating analogue voice over SoADSL.
  • 31 January 2027 : Openreach deadline for switching off ALL the analogue PSTN equipment.
  • 2030 : Temporary SoTAP transition solutions get removed, and telephone exchanges get decommissioned.

If you read the small print in your Plusnet contract (depending on the version) you will probably find that it is only broadband that is key to the contract. Phone, e-mail, webspace, static IP, usenet, etc are extras that can (some have been) withdrawn without invalidating the contract.

However, I suspect it is likely that they will move you with more or less the same deal - or they would risk losing your business. After all they can always up the prices at the next contract renewal.

If they are forcing you to move because they can no longer supply the service, then the early termination charges wouldn't apply - so you could potentially move to another ISP rather than EE.
