I think I pay too much...

I've been with plus net for just over a year now. My current billing charge is £24.48 per month.
I get:
60GB download limit
Speeds of up to 20Mbps
Activate phone line
Free talk evening and weekends
I use around 15-30GB each month - I'm happy paying for 60GB though.
Now, through speed tests, I get around 1.5 - 1.9 Mbps.
I no longer have a house phone, and do not use one.

So, can it be justified why I'm paying the same amount as an individual who gets speeds of 20Mbps?
Shouldn't I be paying lower? Just because my area does not have fibre optic, I get speeds 11 times slower for the same price.

Re: I think I pay too much...

The simple answer is no you aren't paying too much ( see next line) but it does look as if your download speed is slow so can you supply some details - see my ps
Unfortunately you can't have adsl without a phone line but you could, as some of us have, pay for a year up front and save £3.50 per month.
ps Can you post some router stats and roughly how far are you from exchange?

Re: I think I pay too much...

I'm not sure how to get the router stats - but I have set it up correctly.
I'm roughly 1700m away from the exchange.
I've never exceeded 250kb/s when downloading - through both a wired/wireless connection.
I have found that another provider is offering a cheaper deal,
24Mbps, 40GB DLs w/ line rental - £17pm.
I think I have a cancellation charge on my account though, not sure why.

Re: I think I pay too much...

To get the router stats look here http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,96155.0.html
It would be worth giving the rest of the information requested
The speed you quote is UP TO 24mbps
Cancellation charge is if you don't move the broadband using a MAC but just cancel

Re: I think I pay too much...

Thanks Oldjim. I got my router stats below.
I am aware that it is up to 24Mbps which means I should catch the same speeds at a cheaper price. Although, I do like the security of a 60GB usage allowance.
I read that about using the MAC to switch, thanks for the clarity.

Re: I think I pay too much...

Given your attenuation you aren't likely to get much, if any, speed change
However you are a lot further from the exchange (wire length) or else there is a load of aluminium in it
From the attenuation the wire length is about 4km (2.5 miles)

Re: I think I pay too much...

My antenna's snapped on my router. Wired transmission is at the same speed though.
With regards to the purpose of this post, why should I pay the same as someone who gets speeds 11 times faster? I'm seeking justification.

Re: I think I pay too much...

Because the charge is per amount used not how fast you use it
Attenuation is between you and the exchange - how much the signal deteriorates along the wires

Re: I think I pay too much...

I guess so, I think there's a pretty big niche for low priced broadband for those with terribly slow speeds like mine. Maybe plus net should tap into that.
I have never exceeded 300kB/s, even with virgin, but that was 3 years ago. If 1.5Mbps is equal to around DL speeds of 250kB/s, then I'm estimating people paying the same price as me can reach up to 3.3MB/s?
Ridiculous  Undecided
Anyway, I need to include fibre optic as a requirement for my next home.
I must have some pretty rusty wires going to and from the exchange then.
Anyway Jim, thanks for the help, may Gandalf be with you.
