Fttp and new phone number

I am sadly moving from Plusnet to BT as they have just started doing fibre to premises which I cannot get via Plusnet at the moment in our area. BT have given me a new landline number to go with the installation. I want to keep my existing number and they have said I need to contact BT as soon as the connection goes live and ask to port my old number across from Plusnet. Never heard of this before, is this right.

Hi @Grainfoot, I'm sorry to hear you're leaving for FTTP at BT.

 

I can't say I've heard of this process previously.

In the past I've seen complaints that the service remained active with us after moving to an FTTP provider, however this is because the FTTP wouldn't require the new provider to take over the service on the copper/FTTC line.
