Our contract ends May 14, 2025 - how many days before this date is optimum to prevent any further charges? We are NOT cancelling (early), just don't want to 'renew'... TIA

Are you moving to a different provider?
If so, do NOT contact Plusnet at all - only deal with the new provider and let them liase with Plusnet.
These forums are littered with tales of woe from customers who have moved away from PN to other providers but informed PN that they are leaving. PN then cease the line which causes problems and delays for the new service = a few weeks without any service.

I was considering just cancelling the Plusnet Direct Debit, but don't really know how their charges work - in advance/arrears? - so don't want to fall foul of a failed payment!
We don't use the landline to 'make' calls so their shouldn't be any call charges, just line rental and broadband service...

As I already said, we are not 'cancelling', just don't want to renew.
The link mentions moving to a monthly rolling contract at the end of a fixed contract - which is what I want to avoid!
The nearest thing to an answer I can see is - "... 14 days (notice) to cancel a residential account."
I can feel a frustrating phone call is the only way to get a definitive answer...!

from the link
For a cease of service, as opposed to moving to another provider, it is possible to:
-
specify a cancellation date after the notice period. In this case, a one-off payment will be taken at the time the account is scheduled for cancellation. This payment will include all subscription charges up until the end of the requested period and no further subscription charges will be payable. Although you will still have to pay for usage charges and any additional services (such as any chargeable calls you make before the account is cancelled) once the account is closed; or
-
close an account sooner than the notice period. In this event any payments due up until the end of the notice period will be required as a final one-off payment before the account closure can be scheduled.

@chinganddavid If you do not wish to move to a rolling monthly contract - at an expensive price - all you can do is cancel the contract, which means you will have no phone or internet.

I would phone on the 15th April and ask for your contract to be terminated on the 14th May at the end of the contract.. Your final invoice will have been issued / paid so no further charges should be levied.
Phone the PlusNet Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 to confirm this if you so desire.

Your current contract is in a minimum committed term. At the end of that term if you do nothing, the minimum commitment ends (along with any discounts) and you move onto a monthly rolling contract. Renewal is only committing to a new minimum term.
So, if you do not wish to enter into a new minimum term and also do not want to continue the contract as a rolling monthly, you are cancelling your contract.
The terms you are looking for is the cancellation notice period. Typically 1 month.
