Early Termination Charge

I rang up to cancel my account on the 19th August. I was informed that the account would be cancelled on the 2nd September, with no further charges as I had paid for my 12th month. The account was still active, so I rang on the 6th, to inform them of this. At this point it hasn't been used apart from the odd phone auto connecting. I was again informed that there would be no extra charges.
I have now received an email informing me of a £12.15 charge that has been added to my account.
Please advise on why there has been extra charges after the account was finished.
