Did Plusnet contact my old provider?

I've been with Plusnet since June this year, I did phone my old provider and cancel the contract and my debit debit with them, but they have no records of me doing so.
and it seems that they've been billing me each month since June, and now demanding payment for a service I haven't used, it says in the letter I received from Plusnet when I first joined " We will take care of everything including contacting your old provider".
How do I go about obtaining this proof from Plusnet so I can get the old provider off my back?
