Contract ending when to switch provider

Hi

My contract expires 14th October, I've received an email with a renewal offer. However I'm strongly considering switching to BT full fibre as it offers better speeds.

The renewal email says "If you decide to leave before the end of your current contract you can do so without paying any early termination fees by getting in touch with us on 0800 587 1942 and giving 14 days’ notice. Once your current contract ends you’ll need to still give us this notice and during this period charges would continue to apply."

Initiating a switch with another provider should do all the work of switching and notifying Plusnet that my account would be closing, so why would I need to phone to give 14 days notice.

Can someone from Plusnet please confirm the procedure, do I need to call, and by what date I can start the switching process given that my contract expires on 14th October.

Thanks
