Confused after name server change

Around an hour ago I changed the name servers on two of my domains from ns1.force9.net and ns2.force9.net to ns.123-reg.co.uk and ns2.123-reg.co.uk. I haven't set mail forwarding on the domains within 123reg as yet.
These two domains are for SWMBO and what I don't understand is why I am now getting all her emails. I have Outlook set in such a way that all emails to her addresses (lets say they are swmbo@domain1.co.uk and swmbo@domain2.me.uk) are received on her PC and all other emails are received on mine.
I was expecting that her emails would just be in limbo until I set forwarding at 123reg.
I have posted the header of one of the emails (names changed) in the hope that someone could explain what is happening and explain what happens in easy to understand detail. Thanks.

Re: Confused after name server change

They are probably coming through the catchall system as the Plusnet mail system ignores the domain part so SWMBO@mydomain.co.uk is also SWMBO@username.plus.com or SWMBO@myotherdomain.co.uk when they are hosted by Plusnet

Re: Confused after name server change

Aha but how come they are coming to plusnet's servers if the name servers have been set to 123reg?

Re: Confused after name server change

I made the assumtion that if I looked up the name servers and they displayed 123-reg then it had all completed so, until then, emails will still be going through PN's.
Am I right in thinking that once it's fully propagated then the emails to the above addresses will then sit in limbo with 123reg until I have set forwarding or set up Outlook to download from their servers?

Re: Confused after name server change

It's three days since I changed the nameservers yet I can still see email arriving without having had forwarding set in 123reg's control panel. I wasn't expecting to be able to receive these emails til I had set forwarding up.
I did a test from one of my domains (mydomain.co.uk: nameservers still with PN) to one SWMBO's and the received header confuses me somewhat - but, then again, I don't profess to understand under the bonet of emails.
So an email sent to swmbo@swmbo_doman.co.uk shows Enevlope to: swmbo_postmaster@mydomain.plus.com
I checked using smalldropbear which confirms nameservers to be with ns.hosteurope.com which is correct for 123reg.
Is it just that I have misunderstood what changing NameServers would do or is something amiss?
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: Confused after name server change

I suggest checking what the domain mail exchange (MX) records say (if there are any). An easy way to do this is to visit
http://dig.menandmice.com/
type swmbo_doman.co.uk into the Domain name box
set Query Type to Any (ANY)
Click Perform query
If there aren't any MX records the mail should be offered to the A record address, which might or might not accept it. However in your case I wonder if you still have MX records at Plusnet?

Re: Confused after name server change

Thamks for that. If I've understood it correctly then it looks like mx0 & mx1 are set to 123-reg.co.uk.

I just had a look at the domain name in the Domain Domains section of PN's portal and realised that I never actually used the Transfer Out option Embarrassed
But a quick look back in 123-reg's Control Panel shows that the ISP TAG is set to 123-REG. So I am back to being confused. Should I still use the Transfer Out option?

Re: Confused after name server change

If your domains had been completely transferred away from Plusnet I wouldn't expect any details of them to appear under your account name in the Member Centre. That could mean Plusnet are using their own DNS records, perhaps causing the peculiar mail behaviour you mentioned in your opening post.
The "transfer out" procedure here refers to "following the instructions on screen". From your comments I assume you've done part of that, but need to complete the rest (raising a ticket?) so that any DNS and webspace records held by Plusnet are removed.

Re: Confused after name server change

It seems my first mistake was assuming that all I had to do was change the Name Servers. I was following my memory which, obviously has seriously let me down Roll eyes
I realise now I should have changed the ISP TAG throughthe portal. So, I have now used the Transfer Out option for one of the domains in question to see what happens next but I also used the Transfer-in option in 123reg's CP as well in the hope it would sort things out. I hope I haven't overly complicated the issue now Embarrassed
It seems that raising a ticket should only be necessary if it's a non-.uk domain. But I'll raise a ticket anyway in the hope someone can help sort it out. Probably won't be till next week now.
So, to clarify things. I should go to PN's Transfer Out and change IPS TAG. According to you above link, spraxyt, that is all I need to do so why do I have this nagging isue that something needs to be done with the name servers?
Thanks for you help.
Actually, just had a thought...
I'm wondering whether it was necessary to move the domains from PN anyway seeing as my account will be downgraded to PAYG when my BB is moved to TT. Does the downgrade still allow me to heep my domains hosted as they are already there? If so can the two I've already tried to transfer out be transferred back in or the transfer cancelled?
I expect I'll have to wait till Monday for a definitive answer to that one...

Re: Confused after name server change

I've attempted to open a question regarding my domain transfer issues and, perhaps, keeping them with PN on the PAYG but can't because there are already 3 questions opened. None of these has been opened by me so I cannot close any of them.
Could a member of the team have a look at the above problem and let me know what could be done, please.

Re: Confused after name server change

My thoughts based on what it says on the Domain Hosting Allowances page for Dial-up PAYG are that no domains can be hosted for free, one domain can be hosted at the appropriate charge. From the Domain Costs page it looks like the appropriate charge is £30.
For the situation you described I think moving registration and hosting to 123-reg is probably the best solution for you. That way everything domain-related will be independent of any ISP you choose to use in the future.
If the issues covered by the 3 tickets stopping you creating another one have been resolved you could respond (to one of them for starters), acknowledge the issue is now complete and ask the agent to close the Plusnet created ticket for you as you need space to raise one yourself.

Re: Confused after name server change

Moving the domains to 123reg was my first thought anyway so I'll continue with that - after all, there's no extra costs involved Smiley
All the currently opened tickets are relating to my move to TT so I can't request that they're closed at this point.
I'll wait top see if any of th Digital Care team respond on Monday and can help sort the mess I've got myself into if it isn't reolved by then.
Thanks.
Edit: I just realised there is a specific forum for Hosting and Domains - perhaps this thread should be moved there?

Re: Confused after name server change

I asked 123reg to look at the current status of the domains in question explaining what I had done so far and the results and I just got a stock answer on how to transfer a domain in to them - not actually very helpful  Angry
