Choosing broadband renewal package help

Hi,
Wonder if anyone can help.
I can renew my broadband package now and have two options and wonder what one would be best for me.

Option one is the unlimited fibre extra with hub one which will give me:

47 - 53Mb estimated download speed
7 - 8Mb estimated upload speed
Guaranteed speed of 43mb.

Option two is unlimited fibre with hub two. This would give me:
38-40mb estimated download speed
7-8mb estimated upload speed
Guaranteed speed of 29.mb

The question I have is, is it better to stay with the hub one for the better download speed or is the hub two better even with the lower download speed. Or are they pretty much the same.

There’s two of us that use the internet and we use the internet to stream on the tv, browse the internet with one smartphone, one tablet and a laptop so just general usage.

@emzmc

If you ring the Customer Options Team  on 0800 013 2632 and ask they will renew your Fibre Extra service AND send you the better Hub 2 for the P&P charge.

This number is answered quite quickly. Just remember to ask for a hub 2.

Re: Choosing broadband renewal package help

For clarity, all fibre products offer the new Hub Two.

In the summary you provided, it is not the router which influences the speed, but the product...

  • Fibre Extra is provisioned on the 80/20 service and sold as 66mbps average
  • Fibre is provisioned on the 40/10 service and sold as 36mbps average

What is "best" for you depends on what you use the internet for - unless you have a household full of heavy streamers, decent ADSL (better than 8mbps) will do most people for browsing, email and a bit of streaming.  Sometimes people's "demand" for every ounce of speed can be akin to an all you can eat buffet - invariably people put more on their plate than they are ever likely to eat!

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

Re: Choosing broadband renewal package help

Sorry to piggyback emzmc, my renewal is due 29/5 and I do have a heavy use house, gamers, tv's, mobiles. I have the fibre extra and changed to a BT hub6, on advice and guidance from here. It has worked ok. (My sons disagree, but they are not paying). Is the Plusnet Hub2 a better option for me?

Thanks

Re: Choosing broadband renewal package help

@Gillybilly

You are unlikely to see any difference in basic performance. The new Hub 2 has some advantages over the original Smarthub, for example:

It's new and comes with a guarantee.

It configures itself automatically,

You can use it as a bridge modem.

I suggest that you get one when you renew your contract for the cost of P&P even if it's only to keep as a spare. Currently you have to ring the Customer Options Team on 0800 013 2632 to renew and ask for one at the same time. They are not sent out automatically if you renew on line. Use whichever colour goes best with your decor (the Hub 2 is an off white colour).

Re: Choosing broadband renewal package help

Thank you Baldrick1, always helpful. Just a quick second question, if my sons decide to pay for another provider, Virgin for example via cable. Would that impact my service from Plusnet via landline.. apologies for my ignorance..

@Gillybilly - No, your PN and Virgin services would be totally separate.
