Broadband usage

I keep getting near my broadband limit - or over!
Am I using bits/bytes all the time my computer is on?
Or am I only using my ration when:
I browse?,
Read emails or send emails?
Play web games (Sudoku)?
Watch videos on youtube?(Not download)
Print?
Scan?
I know how to check my usage but not how to control it!
Regards.

Re: Broadband usage

Which account type are you currently on and how much are you paying?

Re: Broadband usage

These days you're probably using your internet connection the whole time your computer is on, even if you're not directly doing anything on-line.
This is because so many things these days communicate with remote servers, Applications tend to automatically check for updates, windows/osx and various antivirus software will be periodically downloading updates.
If you use anything like skype that will be constantly talking back to it's servers so maintain it's connection (Although it uses very little bandwidth unless you're currently in a call)
Just having the router connected is enough to use some of your allowance if someone decides to try and send you data although again that's usually insignificant amounts.

Re: Broadband usage

From the list you posted watching videos on YouTube could be what's taking up the bulk of your allowance. This comes under streaming - the data still has be be transmitted to your computer even though it isn't saved after you've seen it.
From the View Your Broadband Usage page clicking the Usage breakdown link will show you the types of usage you use most.

Re: Broadband usage

Thank you for taking the time to reply to my query.
I have checked every single line on 'View my usage' page - twice! - and cannot find the 'Breakdown' link that you refer to.

Re: Broadband usage

There are some old account types where that breakdown is not available.

Usage Limit

Plusnet Essentials (Contracted) 10 GB limit until Mar 2015. £10.49 a month but £ 5.00 if I go over the limit. I have tried to limit a Zero extra usage limit under manage my account but this is not accepted.

Re: Broadband usage

Hi, we can set this for you if you wish? Just let us know whether you'd like no extra usage or how much in multiples of 5GB (realise you've said you've tried to set it to 0 but best not to assume on our part Smiley )

Re: Broadband usage

The difference in price between Essentials and Unlimited is less that the cost of an extra 5GB. If you get near your limit (or go over every month) you'd do better to upgrade.
NB You don't have to wait until the end of your current contract to upgrade - there's no penalty on your existing contract if you start a new contract on a different product.
