We have had an email through recently saying we were now on a new contract for 12 months. Neither my wife or I had arranged or agreed to anything.
Is this normal practice?

I'd contact customer services to find out what's happened.

Hi there.
It looks like following your conversation with our sales team last year and agreeing a contract for 24 months, at the time we were unable to put it through for 24 months so we put it through for 12 months.
An internal ticket was left on your account to add a further 12 months once that expired.
Sorry for any confusion this caused.
