iOS iPhone update has assigned unknown passcode so can't use phone

My old unlocked, unused iPhone 4S has done an automatic update and been assigned a 4 digit passcode, so now I can't use it. Can't use iTunes to restore or reset as it's locked. Although it's a known bug, I can't find a solution online so anybody have any suggestions? By the way thanks Apple.
