Trying to call a North America free fone - (00) 800-1-548-0000.

I am going crazy trying to call the number above from my Plusnet Mobile.

Can anyone help?  I have enough smart cap credit, but am failing miserably to call the number above.

I have tried adding a 1

+1800 1 548 0000

No luck!

I have also tried variations of 00 1 800 1 548000.

And googled alternatives!  All help would be massively appreciated.

thanks

That second '1' looks to be superfluous.

Have you tried 001 800 548 0000? Calling from the UK it won't of course be toll free.

I dont mind paying (though it seems odd if plusnet dont pay)  - I just need to get through and have no landline any more.

Re: Trying to call a North America free fone - (00) 800-1-548-0000.

Have you tried eplacing the 800 with 880 ?

from this link https://www.howtocallabroad.com/qa/toll-free.html

Another way to dial North American toll free numbers from abroad is by replacing the 3 digit toll free codes with other codes introduced years ago:

  • 880 replaces 800 - so the example UK to US call above would become: 00 1 880 000 0000
  • 881 replaces 888 - again, the example US to Canada call above would be: 1 881 000 0000
  • 882 replaces 877
  • 883 replaces 866

These codes were originally introduced for calls to toll free numbers dialed between NANP countries, allowing the caller and the call receiver to each share their part of the cost (the caller would pay international charges and the callee would pay their national toll free rate). Moreover, according to this official announcement, the codes were supposedly retired in 2004. However, I've been getting reports stating that, not only they still work as described above, but it seems that they can be used to replace regular North American toll free codes when dialing from any country, and not just countries using the North American Numbering Plan.

Thanks I tried the 880 too (googled the same article) - no luck.  Also tried +1 880...

It seems to be that Plusnet stop me calling the number.  I might have to call customer services for a chat.

Keep em coming!

Re: Trying to call a North America free fone - (00) 800-1-548-0000.

Thanks for your post @HarringtonLC and apologies for the delayed staff response.

I'm sorry to see you're having issues calling a North American free phone number.

I've just given it a go from my Plusnet mobile phone and I'm hearing two beeps then the call cuts off, so I've dug out my ancient landline phone and tried calling it, which got through to some form of crackly switchboard. The crackling may very well have been due to my handset itself, but it's served its purpose at least.

I've dropped an email to our second line mobile support team for help and I'll post back when I know more, this should be within the next 5 working days at the latest.

Re: Trying to call a North America free fone - (00) 800-1-548-0000.

Hi @HarringtonLC

Our second line mobile support team have liaised with a service manager for our mobile service, who believes that this particular number can't be called from a Plusnet SIM for one reason or another, as we've tested it via three Plusnet SIMs, as well as a 3 SIM and an internal phone (I suspect VoIP).

Based on this, it looks like the issue may be at the other end, rather than our side. Sad

I'm really sorry for how long it's taken to investigate this, but I hope this still helps.

If you have further issues or there's anything else you'd need help with, feel free to get back to me and I'll be happy to help, though I'm going away on holiday after today for 9 days, but I'll be back on the 7th February.

Thanks gandalf. I very much appreciate you following up.
It works off a landlines! Just not a plusnet SIM. That suggests to me that the issue is at Plusnet end, but I'm happy you have done all you can to help.

Best

Re: Trying to call a North America free fone - (00) 800-1-548-0000.

It does indeed work from a landline however from our testing, it doesn’t appear to work from a mobile phone whether that’s Plusnet or another mobile provider, which suggests the issue may be at the other end.

Let me know if you need any further help. Smiley
