Tethering not working

Hi
I can't tether my Huawei Ascend G6-L11 Rom v118 (Android 4.3) on PN but it worked OK on EE.

I tried:
Start USB Debugging
adb shell
settings put global tether_dun_required 0

gives me 'Permission Denied'.

Some research suggested I need to 'root' the phone so I tried:
Root Genius, sticks at 27%, bring up Chinese on the phone but I can't 'click' on anything.
Kingroot, switches to Chinese on windows 'selection' boxes, but evetually it loaded on the PC...

apparently the phone is rooted but now 'adb shell' gives me:

'adb server version (31) doesn't match this client (36); killing...'

and 'unable to find device'.

An earlier message on this forum suggested I should set up superuser, so I've downloaded that.

What I have now is:

enable USB debugging

Ensure the phone is connected as a Media Device (MTP)

start Superuser on the phone

adb shell

su

settings put global tether_dun_required 0

I now get:

Hi there @peterd51,

I am very sorry to hear you are having trouble with tethering your device and I apologise for the inconvenience caused.

To clarify we do allow tethering on our network as per this link: https://www.plus.net/help/mobile/tethering-with-plusnet-mobile/ which includes further information. All handsets are different on whether they allow tethering, while we cannot advise you further I'm sure a community member will be able to help with your device.

thanks, I'd already seen this in similar posts.

I was hoping that one of the other guys posting here would have some ideas.

I found various bits and pieces around the internet but I haven't found the one or two instructions that will make it all work.

If you look at your APN, what is it showing for APN Type ?
Try using
APN Type: default,dun
Or
APN Type: *

Hi Mark,

it was set to 'default,dun', I've just tried '*' and also set to nothing but it's not working.

DNS is working, I can ping www.bbc.co.uk and it resolves to an IP address but the browser just hangs, it can't get to the site.

Win 10 Ethernet settings show it's connected to the phone at around 500 Mbps but it's not getting through the phone on port 80.

BTW, browsing on the phone itself is working OK.

Hi,

sorted, after many days playing around and looking at dozens of websites, solutions, etc.

I found a referece somewhere to 'ClockworkMod Tether (no root)' and a google search got me to the website.

It's free to use for 14 days then a one-off cost of US$4.99, and it works on my laptop and my main PC (backup link in case of broadband failure).

There's an APP for the phone plus a couple of .msi files for the PC.

on the phone, settings:
developer options>turn on at top of screen, turn on USB debugging
mobile networks>data enable
more>tethering & portable hotspots>USB tethering on
start Tether App

on the PC:
start Tether

I hope this helps others with the same problem.
