Replacement SIM activiation when abroad

I live in Sri Lanka and occasionally need to use my UK (postpaid contract) number, but have lost the SIM.

Will the replacement SIM that I am about to request need to be registered on the UK network before I can use it here?

If the answer is "yes", I will need to ask the tenant in my UK home to open the envelope and find a unlocked handset to register it in before they post it to me in Sri Lanka.  If not, I will simply asked them to forward the envelope.

The replacement SIM will need to be activated manually by us once you’ve received it.
