Pay as you go sim has gone up 100%

We have a pay as you go sim that’s been costing £6 a month, we don’t use data mainly texts and a few phone calls. We have had no contact from plusnet apart from the text message saying your now taking £12 a month out of the bank.
Has anyone else had this ?
Is it even legal to double someone’s bill without notification ?
to top it all off suddenly we can’t send text messages ! Tried numerous things and we have full signal too.
